(Possible) Stupid Question.

Post by turborip »

Is there anyone here that only collects a specific portion of Valiant, say pre-Unity only or specific titles and screw the rest or is everyone here an absolute completeist?

I ask because I'm mostly having a crisis of self-doubt wondering if I'll ever bother finishing a complete run of Valiant due to the my ever decreasing comics budget and areas of interest. Yes, I want to read Magnus and Archer and Armstrong and finish getting the 5 issues of Shadowman I need, but should I ever really give a crap about a Geomancer VVSS or a Predator/Magnus trade or Valiant Voice? Or even series that have really expensive final issues but were hideous reads? That last part comes due to finding the final issue of Magnus but being quite unimpressed at the interiors.

Just wondering. Keep in mind, I'm coming at this as a pure reader anymore, not as a collector.

I collect the stories, not the premiums.

I *have* a lot of the premiums, but they're from back when you could get Valiants very inexpensively.

The stories are worth it, IMHO. Don't overlook them.

Good luck! :thumb:

And I *loved* Kobasic's work on the later issues of RAI and MRF.

If you're not coming from a collector standpoint, then there is definitely no need in bothering with books like Geomancer V.V.S.S. or other high dollar books.

In fact, I think there are several members here that don't bother with anything shortly after Unity. Most of the later books are painful to read, to tell you the truth. There are a few gems in the rough, but not much. It's basically a steady downhill slide that gets worse and worse.

EW, Shadowman and Bloodshot managed to stay decent till the end, but most ended up circling the drain by the time they called it quits.

I'm a reader first, collector second. I have a couple of VVSS books and a handfuil of Golds, but to me, those are variants/reprints. I don't collect covers; I collect comics. And I collect them for the stories.

My collection is every unique story and that's it. If I happen across a variant or a Gold and it falls into an affordable price range, I'll pick it up. If not, I slough it off and consider thaty I already have that story in the regular edition.

So, the short answer to your question is I could n't care less about the Geomancer VVSS but would get the Magnus 64.

I am in agreement with Steve, I got most of my VVSS and golds cheap or I would have not collected them. For me, I think buying the older expensive trades (unity and predator vs magnus) due the high price tags. Just buy what you like, I think getting runs of most of the core books, Bloodshot, Shadowman, Harbinge, etc is a good idea, but you dont have to get Psi-lods, secret weapons, etc. The only problem is sometimes the stories from the core books tie into these. The valiant voices are extremely hard to get and a full set might run you a decent amount. I'm yet to find find the last two

I understand where you are coming from. I try to just buy the regular issues unless I get a good deal (except for the case of XO which I have to get them all).

Yea, I kinda have my own complete list as far as what I want in my collection. I do like having everything BloodShot including the variants [still need a vvss tho, just missed out a few auctions] And I do like the Valiant Voice so that's pretty much the only thing I know ill chase for a long time, the reguar issues are fine with me! Great Stories/Art.
Agree with DJ, Bloodshot was good till the very end. Still need to read the later shadowman tho. X-O was great, say the first 25 issues and the last 2 issues were kinda interesting. I still like having one copy of every regular issue, but I dont need PUNX in there of course. lol. Dont need Some of the acclaim stuff either like the magnus & X-O Runs. BloodShot, Turok, Shadowman, Solar, EW's, those I like having all the issues to. Interesting take on the characters.

I like the reading too.

I only collect pre-Unity except for Rai, which I have a full run of (thanks, Elveen!)

I've collected everything at one time or another, I think I've owned all the VVSS's except for the EW 27 and will still pick up any of them if I think they are a good deal.

I only "hoard" pre unity though!

I’ve stopped with a solid run (including premiums) through the serial number contest. I had much more but lost all my post Unity issues in Katrina. For the most part I’m content with what I have.

Ive collected all the regular issues and bought a few golds. My goal always has been to be able to eventually sit down and read the entire story all the way thought.

I really appreciate all the replies.

I've found myself more interested in the Stories but once in a while will come across a deal on some variant or elusive issue but couldn't decide whether to keep those or use them as fodder to obtain more of the commons to complete the stories. That's the path I think I'm more headed in.

I'm not sure why I got all weird about worrying about my 'collector' status. I think its just been kind of a crappy week at work at its got me questioning all sorts of aspects of my life, even Valiant comics!

You know. For me, I was always a reader, but then I became a collector. Now I am just a reader, but I have a feeling down the road I will be hunting all of the books that I have had to sell off.

But right now I am so much in to reading, that the books I am looking for are non-valiant stuff I need to fill some holes in runs of books I want to read.

(but I also HAD to sell off my collection.... so my decision was kinda made for me.)

Can someone tell me which titles fell off or were never good to begin with?

I'm trying to re-read all Valiant (not Acclaim) since I stopped collecting after unity when i was younger.

I recently picked up a few gold issues and my reason being was I wanted them when I was a kid but didnt have the means to obtain them.

PS. I also threw out a bunch of Voices a few months before I discovered this board. :!:
