Wizard World LA
So, who went on Friday? I was there as a volunteer. I did see someone there with a Shadowman logo t-shirt.

I'm mostly wandering around. I was also at the DC booth for a little while getting stuff signed.ZephyrWasHOT!! wrote:I was there....where were you, Spider? I'll be there tomorrow (picking up books) and Sunday (dropping off books to CGC.)
First BIG con I've attended in...god, I have no idea how long. At least 10 years.
It helps having friends in the industry, I got an exhibitor pass. Yay.

Oh, also talked to Mike Mayhew, X-O...he says hi. We talked about the visit to Atomic in..sept? Anyways, he's gonna be out there again for Free Comic Day May 19th (or thereabouts), so stop by. Mention me and get a 75% discount on his original art.
Ok, just kidding about that last part.
He DID say 'man, that sketch was the worst I've ever done, and there's a PICTURE of me doing it! That Finch is a MADMAN!'
He also called it 'Magnus' again. I didn't think it politic to correct him.
And, saw Zeck's original Secret Wars #9 cover for sale...$3800.
Absurd.
$3800 for a non-key Zeck Secret Wars cover?
It's funny, in my head I was like 'eh, probably $400-$500, I can talk 'em down.'
Ha ha ha ha ha indeed.
The most I'd pay for a PUNISHER Zeck piece is $1,000. Yes, obviously that would sell for a lot more, but not to ME.
I mean, for god's SAKE, you can get a Frazetta ORIGINAL PENCIL SKETCH for $4000. And FRAZETTA is a REAL artist (you know, paintings in galleries and whatnot.)
When was the last time you saw Mike Zeck Secret Wars covers in a gallery?
Suffice it to say, I didn't look at ANY other original art.
It seems the original art biz is quite the racket...I think I'm gonna sharpen my skills, draw some covers, and sell them for thousands of dollars.
What a scam.
Any proponents of the obscene prices for original art, speak up!

Hey Zeph I will be at the SDCC this year, are you going to try to make it to it?
There are so many factors that effect the prices of comic art it is crazy. You really have to know you stuff to collect it outside of a narrow focus. Look at the range of Kirbys art. You might pay in the 10's of thousands for a cover or a key FF or Cap page and as low as a few hundred for a Kirby western page or one from the 70's. You have some young "hot at the moment artist" selling pages in the thousands and you wonder why a Kirby Demon page only gets a few hundred.
Some items to consider:
1) Who the artist is. (penciler & inker both)
2) What is the title they are most known for. (like Frank Miller Dark Knight Batman, Dare Devil, or Sin City pages)
3) What are the characters on the artwork
4) What part of the story is it.
5) Cover or inside page
6) How available is their artwork? (like Dave Sim Cerebus pages or David Lapham Stray bullets pages)
7) anything else thats important to you.
I have been mostly collecting valiant artwork but do have a list of artists and works I would like to own some day. Like a Ron Lim on Silver Surfer, Dale Keown on Hulk, Kelly Jones on Batman, THB by Paul Pope, Silversrti on X-Men, Lee on Wildcats, Charest on Wildcats, Romita JR on Punisher WZ, and many others.

Been 'meaning to go' for about 15 years now...never made it.
Naturally, and all of this goes without saying to you and I.There are so many factors that effect the prices of comic art it is crazy. But you still haven't convinced me that Zeck's cover to Secret Wars #9 is 'worth' $4000. And I'm a Zeck fan! (which, of course, is why I asked about it.)
It DOES NOT SURPRISE me that Dark Knight pages sell for $3000-$10,000. It does not surprise me that Daredevil Elektra pages sell for $5000 each.
Frank Miller is the PINNACLE of the artform.
It DOES surprise me that MM #15 sold for $12,000, especially when I coulda bought it for $600...damn it!
It DOES surprise me that, for the same price as a Dark Knight page, I can only get a Zeck Secret Wars cover. <zzzzzzzzzzzzz>
Makes no sense.
The cover to Punisher limited #1 or #3? YEAH, you bet! It's his best known stuff.
But Secret Wars #9????
Sorry, I don't buy it.

Zeck has got alot of fans with money to pay for his art...$4k for that cover is pretty steep...but the guy has done some awesome stuff and has a style unlike others.I've always liked his stuff, but his stuff is too expensive for me.I can't see any piece of his appreciating too much any time soon if it cost $3-4k.It is a racket, and the days of getting a deal are pretty much gone thanks to the Ebay world.

I AGREE! His Punisher Limited #1, 3, and Batman #417, and 419 are EASILY worth that much....and if I had money to burn, I'd EASILY drop $5K on Amazing Spidey #285...it's, by far, my favorite Zeck cover EVER...COMICKINGS wrote:Zeck has got alot of fans with money to pay for his art
But...Secret Wars #9?
Original Art is such a crap shoot....$4k for that cover is pretty steep...but the guy has done some awesome stuff and has a style unlike others.I've always liked his stuff, but his stuff is too expensive for me.I can't see any piece of his appreciating too much any time soon if it cost $3-4k.It is a racket, and the days of getting a deal are pretty much gone thanks to the Ebay world.
Too iffy for me.
Back to WWLA...
I saw one of Jason Ewert's Batman #232 9.8's (this is specifically for you, PP)...it was flawless. In fact, the gents who bought it from him said that JASON said 'Well...it's the BETTER of the 9.8's, and that he didn't want to SAY it should have been a 9.9....but, to me, it's a 9.9, barring interior stuff (which I mentioned.)
He asked 'how much you wanna pay for it.' I laughed and said '$1200'.
He laughed, too.
He remembers, by the way, YOUR copy, PP, selling for $1200.
Anyhoo....fun stuff, fun stuff....I made some AMAZING contacts, and we'll see if anything pans out. I cannot WAIT to start getting proofs made at the printer for my variant guide....it's a hell of a lot of work...I wouldn't recommend such a project to ANYONE but the most dead of diehards...
...the unbelievability of variants out there is astonishing....
And I'm excited about it. If I REALLY put some effort into it, it could be published as early as Summer, 2006.
Of course, a WHOLE LOTTA dominos have to fall into place before that happens.
Phew!

I've always wanted to tile one of my bathrooms with Bloodshot chromium. Of course it would have to be a bathroom that my wife never sets foot in.DJSpecter wrote:That's an awesome idea!
