I did finish Ronin last night.dave wrote: hey veen, did you finish ronin? i read you started on issue #1-then i din't hear nuthin more
It was kinda mixed for me. In some parts it was very exciting and some.... I was lost and could not tell what was going on in the art.
SPOILERS BLEOW:
Here are the positives for me:
1) A samurai in modern devastated new york = cool.
2) I've always liked the "machines have taken over" slant (ala Matrix).
3) The scenes in old school Japan were cool.
4) BIG +, lots of reading needed. These are not a quick read, like TLoEG, a dense read.
The not so goods:
1) Some of the art.... uggh. Not all of it. But when I can't tell what is going on, me no likely.
2) I did not really get the underlying theme with the quad (Billy). Did he create it? Did he imagine it in to existence? Actually, the more I think about, the more I am confused.
3) Virgo should have been more effective against Casey at the end. She should not have been able to get all the way back in. I know she needed to for the story, but it should not have been so easy.
4) In the beginning Agat was all powerful, but at the end? But again, was Agat real or not?
5) the last page.

By biggest complaint is

Over all, I'm glad I read it. I can appreciate what it is it. I can see why it was such a big deal. It is a "higher" style of writing.... but that does not mean that "I got it' in the end.
One last thing, sometime I will re-read it for sure. I read it in small parts, so maybe so of my issues with understanding it can be due to the choppy reading that I did.
Final grade, 6 out of 10.

First Comics did a reprinting of Lone Wolf and Cub back in the late 80's. It lasted 45 issues, but the reprinting was not complete. I believe Dark Horse came out with a complete reprinting of the story in 28 trade paperbacks. It's a LONG story, I've only read a few of the First Comics reprints.X-O HoboJoe wrote:Second this. Some things I know and some I look up. For instance, I knew about the First Comics reprints, but I didn't know how many volumes Dark Horse did, so I looked that up. Also, I had no idea who the guy in the cartoon above was, so I went and looked that up, too.X-O HoboJoe wrote:Brother J wrote:First Comics did a reprinting of Lone Wolf and Cub back in the late 80's. They are small pocket-sized TPBs, 4"x 6" and retail for only $10. They also read fast so they're good for traveling. I have 1-6 so far, excellent stuff. 6 movies were also made written by the writer of the comic series and were one of the main influences of Kill Bill for their outrageous swordplay violence.Elveen wrote:Brother J wrote:First Comics did a reprinting of Lone Wolf and Cub back in the late 80's. I finished reading Gotham Underground 1-9, all of Umbrella Academy:Apocalypse Suite and Zombie King #0.
Gotham Underground was good. I really liked issue #1 so I picked up the rest. The story in the last 2 issues kind of tailed off a little or I'd say it was a great LS. Calafiore's art was excellent throughout the series. The Batman vs. Vigilante fight scenes were awesome.
Zombie King #0 by Frank Cho. I picked this up in a cheapo bin (thankfully). This may be the most lewd comic I've ever read. I picked it up mainly because of Cho. It wasn't what I expected at all. The first 3 (at least) pages are of a zombie *SQUEE* a cow. Not my bag, baby.

I liked it ok. Pretty neat concept and I really liked some of the text pieces, quirky things and back matter in the book, but the pacing was off for me in some spots and it didn't seem like there was very much story told at all. I'll probably check out the current series to see how it goes. I could see myself really liking this after a little more background is laid. Hopefully pacing will get better since that was Way's first work.Lightning Strike wrote:

So I finally read Armorines vol2 #1-4.
Overall it was good. Not great, but better than just ok.
Issue #1 was really good (the best of the bunch). It introduced the Armorines the main characters. there was some good action, but the focus was on the characters and setting the plot.
I liked the back story they gave to Gunny, they took the time to develop his character. There was also some other characters that they fleshed out a bit, so that was nice.
The 90% of the art was very, very good I thought. Some it it looked rushed, but most was on point.
1) Now the bad. They under used the suits at times, and then overused them at times. There was no consistency and believability in the power of the suits. One minute they are trapped on a space ship that is taking them against their will to the spider alien's home base (just use your lasers and blast a hole in the ship and fly out) and then one time they wipe out entire gaggles of bugs in like 1 page. Not good, in fact bad.
The end was lame.....
SPOLIERS............
2) the Armorines are on the SA home base and they are looking like they are gonna die until X-O busts in the space ship and all the bugs get sucked out into space...... whaaaaaaaat? Why didn't they do that?
3) The spider alien that becomes their friend.
No more needs to be said.
But even with the problems, it was still ok. The art is for sure nice. the character development is above average.
I think they had a good foundation for future stories, but alas no more stories.
Overall I give it..... 6 out of 10.

Lone wolf and Cub is the single most impressive finite comic series i have ever read in all my years.daydreamscomics wrote:my partner at the shop says the end of lone wolf & cub is the greatest comic moment he's ever read. period.
28 volumes of pure and utter masterclass.
At one point we missed a volume that never shipped and i waited a few months for restocks.
I read issues 17 to 22 in one sitting and that was one intense session.
They are available in batches on the bay for good money.
I picked up a set on ebay uk for £75 once including shipping.
Everyone that ever read an adult comic should do this series.

I trade as Dead Universe Comics in the UK, which is no surprise to those who know of my legendary Dead Universe habit.
