This is one of the DUs that I have been able to stay away from, this and Impact... they were both put out by DC, yes ?

!mpact was a DC line but no crossovers at all with the DCU. Milestone was only published by DC, the characters were never owned by DC (despite the apparently contradictory wording in the indicia), yet did have a DC crossover.

Yeah seeing DC on there probably kept me away.

What are folks thoughts on these two DUs ? Good, bad ? Your favorite book ?

Here are a few thoughts Chris.

!mpact I'd say Black Hood - only 12 issues and a pretty solid narrative throughout; should be available pretty inexpensively. The writer builds a nice mythology around the titular hood. For me that book is closely followed by the Fly, mostly for the late Mike Parobeck's art, which I know isn't to everyone's taste. The whole line was very much 'all ages' in tone, which so few books are these days, which to me is a shame.

In terms of Milestone my favourite isn't for everyone's tastes being that it could be (unfairly, probably) described as either Vertigo-lite or Morrison-lite, but I really enjoyed Xombi. It read like a modern fairytale or as a fable in some ways, but not as a kids book if you get my meaning. Close to that for me in terms of overall quality was Icon which is basically about two characters finding each other and growing into their roles. It inverts the Superman archetype as well as the Batman and Robin paradigm along the way. If you want something a little more visceral then maybe try Blood Syndicate, but bear in mind that the Milestone line always stayed away from the 90's trend of grim and gritty, with a couple of possible exceptions.

As to good and bad - I re-read books from both lines quite regularly, so they have always had a strong impact (no pun intended) on me. Of the two I'd milestone is a stronger line, but that it is less traditional as a superhero line when compared to Ultraverse or CGW for example, so bear that in mind.

Leon. :thumb:

My :twocents: -

Static and Icon were well written, but never grabbed me. For some reason, I never read Xombi. But, for my money, Hardware and Blood Syndicate were both really good - they had "edge' to them, if you know what I mean.

I was surprised to learn a couple of days ago that Xombi (arguably one of the best Milestone books in terms of creative quality) had the lowest print run of all the ongoings, and apparently by some distance.

Makes me curious about the print runs of the various titles.

This kind of info is of great interest, especially versus some of the hype books and simply other regular DC titles for instance.

I always figured Xombi was the least ordered being part of the secondary tier they put out and that it was slightly more offbeat in appearance alone.

Okay, I'm ready to take the plunge and start looking for this DU. If anyone has any full run reading copies of Xombi, Static, Icon, or Hardware for sale, let me know. :thumb:
