It sure would be nice to find some of those things there.

I think the subject may have been broached before, but could it be a simple matter of economics that is hindering the release of the hardcovers as well as any new material?xodacia81 wrote:VEI needs to do something. This is twice that something has "gone wrong" and neither time have we gotten word on any real reasons why, and certainly nothing in a timely fashion. "Printing errors"-announced a month after the A&A hc was due out? "New books generated by the end of the year"? Well, here it is, 2009 and no word on what is being generated. I understand about legal contracts and all but even a disclaimer saying they can't discuss ANYTHING yet, would suffice. Unless they can't even do THAT. Either way, this is very frustrating indeed.
If so, and if I was in that boat, I wouldn't go around talking about it. There's a big difference between discussing 'printing errors' and 'we couldn't pay the printers'.
I help out on a website devoted to Japanese sci-fi and fantasy, and one of the stories to come out of 2008 was the loss of several companies that were involved in the niche DVD market (BCI and Tartan, to name a couple) due to the economic crisis. I cant help and equate what VEI is doing with these titles to those DVD companies that were putting out obscure Ultraman DVDs. Yes, there is a market, maybe even a rabid one, but is it big enough to launch new titles right now in these economic times?
I'd rather have some silence if it means they are riding out the times and don't want to discuss money issues, rather than see the presss release that they are closing shop like so many other small publishers.
All this is purely speculative, of course!

Oh, I have considered that and if that is the case, I think it's very unfortunate and wish them the best. But if it isn't economics, I'd like some info on what we can expect this year, even just "hey guys, if everything goes right, we should have our first monthly by December". Generalities that don't betray inside biz practices wouldn't be bad and indeed, an improvement over the crickets we've gotten this fall.turborip wrote:I think the subject may have been broached before, but could it be a simple matter of economics that is hindering the release of the hardcovers as well as any new material?xodacia81 wrote:VEI needs to do something. does anyone think maybe Dark Horse would be interested in buying VEI? thats probably our only hope of reuniting the Gold Key and Valiant characters. i have lost all faith in VEI's ability/desire to put out product, and am desperate to find a silver lining. its probably a pipe dream, but the lack of communiques from VEI tells me there are serious problems with there. i think dark horse could do a good job with valiant as an imprint, or something. thoughts?

While I can understand the frustration with a definitive known plan, I would like to point out two obvious things:
1) It's a marathon, not a sprint. There are many who level "VALIANT grew too fast and that's why it failed" criticisms now want VEI to start publishing. The economic downturn was pretty much unexpected by a lot of parties. This very messageboard has several postings from members cutting back on funnybook purchases due to economic realities. VEI will need more than the hard-core purchasing pamphlets if they are to grow and thrive. This might not be the right time and, if it's not, they're wise to tape the brakes.
Again, actions and results are what matter, NOT unfulfilled predictions. VALIANT *and* DEFIANT both teased fans with things that were in the works and that never materialized. I don't want VEI to follow suit. And, so far, they haven't.
If slow and steady truly wins the race, I'm all in favor of slow and steady.
2) I think that 2009 will be a very good year for VALIANT fans. Those of you who are already mourning them should most likely stop.
[I know that turborip said all of this earlier and better, but I thought it bore repeating]

As for new stuff, does Playing God count possibly a wee bit?
If so, may I pimp it again?

I hope they launch something this year as well. It'd be so great to have them put comics out and begin working on video games & toys because of that. I think it does start with reviving the universe so that the general public can see that this is not just another novelty dead universe and investors will take notice and projects like a Universe Wide video game becomes more theasable and you know there will be no money problems once that happens. Video games are not affected by the economy, as funny as that may sound its a fact, people buy games and stay home in tough times. Animated DVD's, Movies, Merchandise, the money is there to be made. Original Hero Stories are a sure shot right now, I see NO risk in doing this the right way and in a major way.

Best toy ever, they sure don't make cool stuff like HUGO anymore.
I think someone should start a new thread..."Best toy they had as a kid" or post it here.

Hi guys, We're still here, and there's some really exciting news that we'll be announcing. The only reason I have refrained from posting anything is that it can often cause more harm than good. But everyone seemed especially restless today, so I thought I may as well jump in this time. I will continue to read, but not be active on these boards for the foreseeable future. Hope everyone had a great holiday. Dino
