I'll warn you in advance, these shows tend to be very small shows with not much room to move around. I am a regular at the Milwaukee and Gurnee, IL shows and went to their first show in Madison, which was REALLY small. The Beaver Dam one is new so I'd assume it's going to be a real small show, as well. Also, I think the weather's going to be pretty crappy in that area tomorrow, so who knows how many people will actually show up. Alan, the dealer that organizes a lot of these shows, usually has a good selection of bargain books to root through, and the more you buy, the cheaper they get. He has boxes of books for .50 each if you buy at least 10 comics and .40 each if you get at least 50 comics. If you talk to him, tell him the "Cheesehead Valiant Fan" says hi! Beware though, he'll talk your ear off if you let him.

So I got some good stuff!! Alan gave it all to me for 50 cents each....or at least I believe it was Alan, I didn't actually catch his name, but I did say that the Cheesehead Valiant Fan said hi, and he related a story, one of the many that he related, about getting a book signed for the biggest Valiant fan in Wisconsin...so I think it was him....and he said that you gave him a list for Ultraverse stuff and he said to tell you that he has a big stack of Ultraverse waiting for you!! Tiny show, but I got some stuff I needed!!

That was definitely Alan, he got Bob Hall to sign a copy of Shadowman to me, but he didn't know my name, so instead the book reads something like "to the biggest Valiant fan in Wisconsin, Bob Hall". The funny thing is he made me pay for the signed book! I wonder what he would have done if I told him I didn't want to pay for it?

I had gotten quite a few pre Unity Valiants out of his boxes over the last few years, but now he knows enough to pull them out. I still usually find a lot of good stuff in his boxes, though. I gave him an Ultraverse list after looking through his boxes and realizing he didn't have one Ultraverse book in there. He told me he was setting them aside for someone else, but if I gave him my want list, he'd look for me. That's cool that he told you, and thanks for passing the message along!

By the way, if you care to reveal it, what did ya get? I kind of wish I had gone to that show, but I had a fantasy baseball draft plus I wasn't sure how bad the weather was going to be. We were supposed to get a lot of snow that never materialized in the Milwaukee area.

I hit the Lenexa, KS midwest comix convention last weekend. Alan is very cool. They are having PlanetComiCon on April 2-3. It should be good. I intend on going. Talked to a couple of guys there that said they have lots of Valiant stuff. One guy even said he was going to bring an entire Valiant Collection (yes, I asked if I could get them before he brought them--can you believe that he doesn't have email?) :!:

Anyone else going? If not, I'll let you all know how it went!

I bought all kinds of Valiant/Acclaim books for 30-40 cents each. Nothing too exciting, just working on my 2nd set of books. Did get some Uncanny X-Men books in the 50's for $6, 10, and $10--so I was happy. :D
Smile----it makes others wonder what you're up to!

won't be going to PlanetComiCon (just a tad too far from Milwaukee), but the same weekend (Sunday) they are having the next local show here in Brew City, so I'll be all over that. I love cheap books!

We're you able to find anything? Someone needs to tell Alan that he should start carrying around more Valiants....he says he has a lot more, but that he doesn't bring them all to shows!

i found some acclaim stuff and some later valiant issues from him, and magnus 8 w/card for $0.75 and some other acclaim stuff from another guy.

i've told him to bring more valiant/acclaim stuff to shows, and his answer was "you mean like 100 copies of the ones with shiny covers?" i'm guessing he has a ton of turok #1, bloodshot 0 & 1, magnus 25, etc.

plus, he never has his books in order, and i don't think they are sorted at his house either, so he probably doesn't know where half of them would be anyways :D

I absolutely HATE when he goes on about Valiants, he either has to mention the "ones with the shiny covers" or he goes on about how I should strive to collect all the different serial numbers from the contest books. He always tells the same story about how some collector he ran into was buying up those books just because they had "different numbers" in them. Alan's a good guy and sometimes funny, but he can irritate you the way he tells the same stories and jokes over and over again.

haha yeah i hear ya, i usually here him comment something like this when people ask about the cards he sends out:

"we keep track of them in case people stop showing up because they got married"

and whenever i get a good stack pulled out, he goes:

"are those the ones you are going to put back and then buy the rest?"

never fails, same sayings EVERY time i see the guy. he's definitely a good guy (he even dropped some comics off in iowa city for me when i left them at a show once) he's just a little on the wierd side...

I drove to go to the show in Omaha this weekend to find out it was last weekend. Wizard was wrong!!! I was pretty peeved but spent my day at a record/comic shop in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He had a ton of acclaim stuff for .50 that I pulled out only to find out he wrote .50 on the first page of every book. I put them all back. Why do people do this? I did pick up a Kamandi 1 for .25 in poor condition. He has his stuff in Marvel, DC and Independant sections in a room but everything is just thrown in the boxes and piles stacked on top of them so I had to stack the piles up just to look through the comics. I spent 14 and found a couple Batman villain first appearances I was looking for but overall it was a disappointing weekend. I don't think I'll go to that shop again.
I wish I would have looked further into the show and wouldn't have wasted a tank of gas and 6 or so hours at the shop and driving. Now I know for next time.
