How do I print a comic book?

Post by MedicAR »

Just hypothetically speaking, if I were to produce a small indy book, does anyone know how to get it printed? Can somebody like Kinko's do it, or should I try to approach a true printing company? I'm looking at newsprint or slightly better stock with a slick cover, nothing too fancy, no more than 16 pages to start. Very small print run. Maybe 20 at most to start and see how it all works.

Here's a good page for you:

For someone starting out, I think my recommendation would be to go with an On Demand Printer, like comixpress. Here's their web site:

Thanks for the links! Comixpress looks like the way to go! For less than $20 I can get set up and see a proof copy prior to anything else. That's dirt cheap in my book!

The print on demand sites are certainly a good port of call... although if you are only looking at a print run of 20 you'd probably find it quicker, easier and cheaper to find a good photocopier and do it yourself.

I thought of that, but want it to be closer to a finished product than a high school art project. I want to get a real feel for the whole process even if it is less than cost effective.

Be careful with comixpress, I have heard some mixed reviews with payments and such so research that - try LuLu press, a few webcomics I read regularly print yearbook type editions there and have had positive experiences there.

Thanks for the support! Right now everything is very preliminary. I want to see what small press is capable of and how the full size stuff translates to the printed page. That's a big part of why I wanted more than a copier. If it looks like junk, I want to know to stop and move on to something else.

I'll let you know what happens as it happens! :thumb:
