That’s a scary situation for any collector. Do you have a link to more information about the ban?

And CFLs aren't totally environmentally friendly either:

Good points Heath, and i respect your opinion. but just a couple more things to consider:

As far as price goes, yes they are more expensive, but they end up more than paying for themselves in the long run.

And in the last article you highlighted in your post (about the mercury), Wendy Reed, who manages EPA's Energy Star program offers this different perspective: " even though fluorescent bulbs contain mercury, using them contributes less mercury to the environment than using regular incandescent bulbs. That's because they use less electricity — and coal-fired power plants are the biggest source of mercury emissions in the air". And all we have to do is recycle them in a safe manner and the problem's solved. Yes, getting people to recycle them might be easier said than done, but overall I think fluorescents are a good thing. As with most environmentally friendly options i believe it's a win-win situation. Less energy is used and in the long run you save money.

This isn't the problem. The problem is when you break them in your home. If you want to comply with the law in some states you pretty much have to hire an environmental firm to come clean it up.

My main problem is the government forcing consumer choice. Let the market decide.

I'll be stocking up on incandescents.

NOOOOO!!!
That is not just a tragedy, it's sickening. I know it's been said before but how many of the books we want have been "lost" to this sort of stuff? Or, tossed into bins behind stores and sent to landfills? Truly, sad.

Guess that means that the ones that are left over are worth more...

I got rid of the old incandescent bulbs in my house a couple of years ago and switched over to CFL's. Nice thing is they save $$ and last 5-8 years depending on which type you want. I haven't had one single CFL burn out since I switched over and I like the energy savings as well.

I switched over too, but there are places, like lamps that could get knocked over, where it is just unwise to use them.
