The suit was designed to make the wearer of the control ring the dominant force. So even if Shanhara could absorb another alien essence to make it stronger as Ian suggests, then Aric would still be in control and rule the suit.

This discussion reminds me of how much I hated the VH 2 version, heh.

Anyway...

But there's nothing in the concept to suggest that the suit could absorb its wearer's essence.

The only thing that was established was that the wearer's psyche could affect the suit (i.e. Randy's guilt/self-hatred, whatever it was).

Unless you want to consider Darque's infection of the X-O suit as meaning that the armor could absorb his essence.

I didn't care much for the VH2 version either, but mainly because Aric should be the one in the suit IMO. The "barbarian in a can" aspect set it apart from the other countless armored hero books out there. I would still like to see them save parts/characters of the VH2 X-O though. Maybe VEI could combine Donovan Wylie with a new Armorines premise and have him develop the suits.

Maybe.

I think that Donovan the video game developer can work within the context of the original VALIANT Universe, and he could be integrated into Aric's story if he's the one that rescues him from Doug's virtual reality scenario.

I also like the idea of someone named DOUG being Aric's worst enemy, it's so... simple, a no brainer.

Other opinions to the contrary, PunX featured appearances by Harada and Tank, from Secret Weapons. Yes, it was a humor book and yes, it was satirical, but it also was set in in the VH-1 universe.

Can't recall where it was discussed recently, but what do you all prefer..... release order or continuity?

I'm getting closer to re-reading the early stuff. Looking at MOTA's list makes me not want to read the books so I'm thinking I'll go with release order.

Plan is to read in release order and quit reading individual titles as they start to suck. I've got a feeling that I'm going to end up quitting right where I quit back in the day. Harby shortly after 25, A&A after BWS, Rai 8, x-o after 15, Hard Corps and Psi Lords 1, etc. I'd like to be able to say that I've read it all, but I can't subject myself to stuff I don't like just to do it.

Rai 9-through the end of the Malev war didn't really suck, but you said "when they start to suck" I don't know, you own 'em, you might as well read 'em. That's how I look at it.

Consider it penance. :P

Yeah, I might ask around to see if there's any good stuff later in a run. I didn't really care for Rai much back in the day. I re-read the pre-unity stuff a few years ago and it was just so-so for me. Not something I get too interested in.....

I definitely get that, but I own tons and tons of other good comics that I still haven't read yet. I'm kind of using a trim the collection of the bad stuff as I go approach. Valiants are no exception.

Whoa, what, is the Preview original material or is it just a couple of pages from issue 1 in black & white?

Reading the database too early spoils quite a few things, such as Aric's sword attachment and Ken's betrayal & arm addition.

Anyone actually read it this way? I'm Magnus #0 away from completing VH1 and want to read it in story order (vs release order). Does it play out well?

Anyone on this?

I (hopefully) have a Magnus #0 on its way and want to make this my next big reading project.

Leaning towards reading it in release order the first time and down the road a good bit trying it this way.

I have finally started reading the universe from the beginning. I am somewhat following MotA's list, but now double-checking books as there are some definite inaccuracies. Also, I skipped all the Gold Key reprints for now. I plan to read those pre-Unity to see if there's really anything relevant to the VH1 issues or not. I'm about three months of books away from Unity #0. I plan to put up a thread about the pre-Unity read once I'm done.

I get alternating Solar and Magnus to start as we are building along both timelines, but it seems like the list on page 1 becomes a hybrid of some VH1 history and mostly just using cover date. Almost as if avoiding reading two issues of the same title despite story continuity. For instance, this sequence just doesn't work as Solar, X-O, and the Renegades plots start to intertwine after everyone has their Spider Alien introductions. [Removing Magnus and Rai to focus on the 1990s story dates]

Solar Man of The Atom #4 - 10/1/90 and takes place over a period of months
Harbinger #0: 1/30 - 5/10/91
Solar Man of The Atom #5: 3/25 - 3/26/91
Harbinger #1: 6/2 - 6/6/91
X-O Manowar #0: 11/3/91 [X-O's arrival date]
Solar Man of The Atom #6: 5/26/91
Harbinger #2: 6/6 - 6/9/91
X-O Manowar #1: 11/3 - 12/31/91
Solar Man of The Atom #7: unspecified time between 3/26/91 & 1/8/92
Harbinger #3: 7/6/91
X-O Manowar #2: 12/31/91
Solar Man of The Atom #8: 1/8 - 1/9/92
Harbinger #4: 12/21 - 12/25/91
X-O Manowar #3: unspecified time between 1/9 - 3/1/92
Solar Man of The Atom #9: 3/30/92
Harbinger #5: 3/5/92
X-O Manowar #4: 3/1/92
Shadowman #1: unspecified time around 3/1/92
The VALIANT Era Companion #1: 1967 - 3/31/92
Solar Man of The Atom #10: 2/19/85 - 3/31/92
Harbinger #6: 3/6/92
X-O Manowar #5: 3/26 - 3/27/92
Shadowman #2: 3/13 - 3/22/92

So, my version would be this:

Solar Man of The Atom #4: 10/1/90 and takes place over a period of months
Solar Man of The Atom #5: 3/25 - 3/26/91
Solar Man of The Atom #6: 3/26/91
Solar Man of The Atom #7: unspecified time between 3/26/91 & 1/8/92
Harbinger #0: 1/30 - 5/10/91
Harbinger #1: 6/2 - 6/6/91
Harbinger #2: 6/6 - 6/9/91
Harbinger #3: 7/6/91
X-O Manowar #0: 11/3/91 [X-O's arrival date]
Harbinger #4: 12/21 - 12/25/91
X-O Manowar #1: 11/3 - 12/31/91
X-O Manowar #2: 12/31/91
Solar Man of The Atom #8: 1/8 - 1/9/92
X-O Manowar #3: unspecified time between 1/9 - 3/1/92
X-O Manowar #4: 3/1/92
Shadowman #1: unspecified time around 3/1/92
Harbinger #5: 3/5/92
Harbinger #6: 3/6/92
Shadowman #2: 3/13 - 3/22/92
X-O Manowar #5: 3/26 - 3/27/92
Solar Man of The Atom #9: 3/30/92
The VALIANT Era Companion #1: 1967 - 3/31/92
Solar Man of The Atom #10: 2/19/85 - 3/31/92

Hopefully I got all my cut & pastes right.

Nice, I prefer publication order as well. Week by week as they came out would be cool.

The best place I know for that info is Mike's Amazing World

Even though they are grouped by month, if you look at a specific issue or series it gives the exact release date.

Thanks Ian, you too! Keep us updated on how it goes. If you put a list together with all the issues by release date make sure to share it on here, I'm sure that might tempt others to join in on the re-read :D
