X-O by..... me
Someone had requested to see some of my art a while back. So here is a nice example I recently did based on one of the X-O covers. This turned out better than expected & I think I'm going to see if Bob Almond will ink it.

Nice job. If only there were someone on these boards that could ink.

I've got to learn how to ink. I've got some reading material for it, & I went down & bought a pen & ink. I made two versions of this drawing, so I might give a try inking one.x-omatic wrote:Nice job. If only there were someone on these boards that could ink.
Do you have any pointers? I've heard that India ink is the best, but it's quality has kind of gone down hill.

India ink is too grey for me. I like Pelikan drawing ink the best. Whatever ink you use make sure it is lightfast as you don't want the art to fade over time. I use Hunt 102 quills and Windsor Newton series 7 brushes. I also have a great "brush" pen. It is called the "Pentel color brush". It is a refillable pen that has brisils like a brush. But...they no longer make them.BodaZoffa wrote:I've got to learn how to ink. I've got some reading material for it, & I went down & bought a pen & ink. This was done on a 9X12 sheet of heavy art paper. I transfered it onto a 9X12 piece of bristol board via a light table, but I got a little carried away with the shading. Now I don't like the transfer so I might use this as a test run.dave wrote:very nice...what size paper is it on?
what sizes does it need to be in order to ink it? i mean really, obviously you COULD ink a 3 x 5 index card but....
all of my work is done and crappy 8 1/2 x 11 printer paper....
Inking seems awkward to me right now, but I guess the only way to learn is to jump right in & do it. My main problem is that I like to use a lot of loose shading with my drawings instead of tight lines. I've been downloading a lot of penciled art by the pros lately (Kevin Conrad, Al Rio, Sal Valuto), & trying to learn from their work.
I've been watching how the pros do their work, & what I did'nt realize is that they will make 3-5 drawings of the same piece. They'll start out with a rough, then trace over it on a seperate sheet with cleaner lines, then repeat on seperate sheets until they have a really tight piece of art. I've always been used to just doing one drawing on a piece of paper & then using shading to fix up the mistakes. Makes you really appreciate the diligence that goes into their stuff.
