The Malev War

Post by ManofTheAtom »

What did you guys think of it? I know that in the past some people have said that they didn't like it, but has that changed somewhat?

If you didn't like it, why? And if you did, why?

I for one liked the new artist on the Magnus series, I thought his work looked really good, sort of a cross between VALIANT art-style and animation. The Malevs and the emperor certainly seemed terryfing.

Some problems I had with the story would be in his first issue Ostrander got Synchron's name wrong, as well as who Willow Tralltrees' dad was. Ostrander had him as a professor while Shooter had him as a senator. The editor was definitely asleep at the wheel here. In fact Ostrander made the same mistakes in Predator vs Magnus.

Another problem I had was the redemption of 1-A. I for one liked that 1-A turned evil and wanted to kill the inmates from the asylum on Phobos. The idea that he was under the Malevs' control was too cliche for me.

Overall, I think that the concept and ideas behind the story were solid, but it certaintly suffered from some mishandling.

As for the Rai part, yeah, "future force" is a lame name for a team. I did like the character of Takao, though. I thought there was a lot of potential there, but the writers did seem to have cornered themselves by giving him Bloodshot's power over machines. That alone should have ended the war in two issues, but instead it dragged on longer than it should have.

What do you guys think?

I liked it. But then again, I was only getting into Valiant when the story was beginning. I much preferred the real Rai, and the Future Force title was a little lame. Had Takao been given a new title and new character (even just a future Bloodshot) i would have been happier. I feel the weakened Rai by making him a Bloodshot ripe off.

I liked it okay. I never noticed that mistake with Synchron. After this, Magnus begins to suck big time

I always liked it. It was actually the first full stor-arc from Valiant that I read and always thought it cool how they pretty much trashed the entire planet (and meant it). It did have its shortcomings (most of which have been mentioned) but I really liked the character sub-plots in the arc; Leejas child by Takeo, the childs birth, the death of Takeo, Magnus's isolation...

The arc was great until issue #39 and then it became staright poo.

Just my $0.02

There were ups and downs to this story. For one thing, they cleaned house far too rapidly in the early Magnus issues and then made the connectivity between Rai & Magnus repetative. I enjoyed most of the story but it could have been handled better.

The war ran from Magnus 21 through 38 and Rai and the Future Force 9 through 21.

After that there was a sort of sequel toward the latter part of the Magnus series when the Malevs returned. That ran from issue 50 through 64 I think.

The Malev War actually started out pretty well. Ostrander was doing good things with it and the cast of characters was enjoyable, but when he left the books the whole thing just went downhill.

The ending was awful as well.

I've honestly never read anything past #47. I gave up on Valiant around Birthquake.

Shadowman was good until the end. In fact, the last 3 issues were some of the best Hall ever did. Turok's Lost Land story during Birthquake was very good too - or maybe I'm just a sucker for Morales art.

There's one issue of Shadowman with an Anne Rice wanna-be that was not that good.

Another problem I have with Shadowman was the apparent direction it was going, which seemed to be to avoid Jack's death in 99 for Acclaim's benefit.

I don't think they were going to avoid his death. I think they were always going to kill off Jack, but SHADOWMAN was going to live. It was a concept not a character. JACK was the character.

Bummer.... there is some good stuff after BQ, not everything.... ut still some good stories. I liked the end of Ninjak for starters, and as oft mentioned Shadowman was Maxwell House. :thumb:

Sure, but I don't think that's what they were going to do long as Acclaim owned them.

Hall has said that he brought Max in so that maybe he could die instead of Jack... and it not them someone else, like the Shadow King or something like that.

Hall has said that if it had been solely up to him, Jack would have died, but he has also said that he was unsure that Acclaim would let him do it, so he had to bring other characters that could die in his place.

Thus why Hall left and the title was given the axe. Now it is up to the audience to speculate on what happened.
