Your Favorite Mini Series, and Why?

BATMAN: YEAR ONE
This is one (of few) comic book(s) that non-comic book readers would enjoy reading (at least my friends).

For me Dark Knight and Year one is always switching places for top mini-series. It depends on which one I read last.

But..but...but...Year One isn't a mini-series.

But yes, if DKR is the definitive Bats story (and ain't no one written one even CLOSE to it yet) then Year One is the definitive ORIGIN story. Boo yah.

And Killing Joke was the definitive Joker story.

Hey...you all who were actively collecting in the 80's....did you realize what you had when you had it? At that time? Turtles, Killing Joke, Watchmen, Grendel, DKR, Miller Daredevil, Sandman, Animal Man, Moore Swamp Thing, Byrne X-Men...did you realize what you had?

Did you realize what you lost as the 90's dawned?

Just wondering.

80's = The Beginning of Magic.

90's = The end. Outside of 1991-1992 Valiant.

And...how long do you think before we have another major milestone event/series in this industry? The last time...by my count....was Shooter's Valiant. It's been 12 years since Shooter's last Valiant was released, and NOTHING...NOTHING of that caliber, the caliber of a DKR, or a Watchmen, or a Swamp Thing, or a Sandman....not a damn thing of that caliber.

Sigh.

I was always very fond of Howard Chaykin's 'The Shadow' mini-series. It was great seeing the character in a modern setting and the later series was almost just as good, but Chaykin's Shadow was really quite amazing. For any looking for a great read, those 4 issues are ones to track down.

How about Future Imperfect, a great Hulk mini series showing a sad future for the Marvel U.

Infinity Gauntlet for sure!
Batman vs Predator I
DKR
Aliens: Genocide
Light Brigade (just recent)

Just read Gilgamesh II... it was good enough that I read all four issues in one evening. Don't quite know what to make of it though. Starlin saying its 'Lonely at the top'?

One mini I'm trying to get hands on for cheap is Superman: Red Son.
Anyone read that one?

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Garth Ennis' work yet. I loved the Goddess mini he did with Phil Winslade and the two Bloody Mary minis with Carlos Ezquerra. Though I've liked his series work, I think he tends to lose steam the longer the series runs. Preacher was amazing up into the 40s, but seemed to run about 20-25 issues too long in my opinion. His first story arc on Hellblazer (Dangerous Habits) was some of the best storytelling in the 90s. I never seem to tire of re-reading it.

currently: Identity Crisis

I'm not even a big DC fan, but this is a great story and the art by Rags is nothing to sneeze at. I don't think anything Marvel is doing right now can touch this series.

I finding it good as well. But me being not a huge or knowledgable DC fan, I am not caring too much about all the second and third string characters that are featured in the mini. Why the focus on the lamer of the DC's rogue gallery? I'm hoping a 'big hitter' is the mastermind to the who-done-it.

Not really a miniseries, but ...

Priest's Black Panther was astounding. He took a secondary character and made him into a player on the level of Doom or Magneto and made it work.

I was really sad to see that one end. One of my favorite reads of the last decade.

I agree!! That Black Panther run was awesome.

So far, all the Priest stuff I've read - Quantum and Woody, Cap and Falcon - have been some of my favorites.

What else has he done??
