Solar, Magnus, Turok Gold Key Books

Post by Snakemann »

Do you buy the pre Valiant books? If not why?

Greg, thanks for the cover gallery you put together on these books.
It has increased my interest in them. Those early Turok books are tough.
I still think the value on these are low. If anyone has these for sale, I am buying in VG or better. I still buy these on Ebay all the time.

Has anyone finished a complete run?

I would buy anything about these characters, sadly.

I collect Magnus as much as I can (which isn't much), have about half of the issues in various conditions. I just want to read them though, I'm not much of a collecter. All of these Gold Key comics have long deserved some decent collections, come on Dark Horse! (or whoever)

I have complete runs of Doctor Solar and Magnus and am working on the Turoks. I probably have most of the Dells and a spattering of the Gold Key issues.

I've enjoyed the Doctor Solar and Magnus stories and can sit and read them in fairly decents chunks, the Turoks are a one or two books at a time pleasure for me. Of the three series, Turok is the most formulaic and it become really apparent as you read several issues in one sitting. Enjoyable but predictable. But the covers are fantastic. I do enjoy looking over the various covers.

I love these books too. I just need two Russ Manning Magnus and three post-Manning Magnus for the full run of those. A large number of them are in exceptionally high grade (cost me £30-£45 each - double that for dollars :( ). I would put them at NM- but I am not a professional grader, so some might be VF+.
I also have eleven Dr. Solars, four Turoks, the Captain Johnner compilation, five Lost In Space and almost a full run of Mighty Samson. These latter two series are not Valiant related, but have great artwork and stories. I would love to see them revived with new stories from Dark Horse.
I intend to complete the Magnus, Solar, Lost In Space and Samson runs, but the sheer size of the Turok run means I will probably only ever have a sample of those.

Which one? To be precise: The same compilation was released twice.

Must agree. One Valiant connection - I have a Lost on Space with a Magnus story as backup story. Have you seen others like that?

Best,

Magnus

I got most of my collection when I lived in the states (btw the transport was not kind on their condition). After that most has been through eBay. I've found more abroad than in Sweden (esp in England). There are a few local stores specialised in US comics and they do have a few Valiants now and then, but not often. When VH2 was coming out I was back in Sweden and I was not the only one ordering them at my shop. I guess about a few dozen people were buying VH2 in that shop (mainly Q&W and Ninjak). I have often wondered myself how much of the US comics production that is exported. Btw I was recently outbid by another Swede for several pieces of Magnus art on eBay.

No real answers, just some impressions. Hope that helped somewhat.

Wow, I thought that Magnus only backed up in DR. Solar. Which issue(s) of Lost in Space are you talking about?

I forgot to answer this in my last message. I have the #1. It cost me £5 (nearly $10) at a comicmart. Apparently the #2 is identical inside.Gold Key is much more expensive here (UK) than the States but I have done well in Solar and Samson from US sellers on the net. :)

Easyish to get regular Valiants, very hard to get variants. I think that the fanbase is small (but commited).

I have about 60 or 70 Dell & Gold Key Turoks. I also have about 40 or 50 Gold Key Magnus. ANd a few Solars. All are fine or better condition and just about all of my Turoks from 1966 forward are in VF+ to NM-. The pride of my collection is Solar 1 in fine and Magnus 1 in VF.

I would like to complete the entire run but will only buy fine or better. Some of them are really hard to get in higher grades and I will not buy them off ebay. Most people do not know how to grade older books. You always see "in great condition considering its age" You do not grade a book by a different standard because it is old.

Issue 58 is the only one I've seen. It has "Journey to the End of the World" (which btw was not new material, it had already been published in a Magnus issue).

PS, has something happened to the GCD web page?
