I really don't have a clear idea of what is going on there. It's all magic and alternate universes.

Some people spend their whole lives believing in fairy tales, usually because they don't want to give up the fabulous prizes.

Re: DC or Marvel - Which is the better comic publisher?
DC is so much better than Marvel. Look at the state of the franchise Marvel books compared to what they used to be since Queseda too over as EIC:
-The X-books are a mess (except for X-Factor--thank goodness for PAD)
-Bendis single-handedly ruined the Avengers
-Spiderman hasn't been good in ten years.
-The FF consist of the Thing, Torch, Black Panther and Storm
-Captain America is dead
-Thor is just NOW being published again after two years of nothing.
-Bendis is given carte blanche to do whatever he pleases (continuity be damned)
I could go on and on here, but you guys know this already. Until someone else replaces Queseda and Bendis is reigned in, Marvel will continue to go downhill.
-Meanwhile, DC has returned one of it's flagship characters (Green Lantern) to new heights thanks to Geoff Johns.
-They've successfully relaunched the JLA & JSA books
-They brought back the multiverses, which will give them a lot more creative avenues.
-They made the right move by bringing Wally back as Flash.
Every move DC makes is turning out to be gold.

I can't believe I am about to do this...
For the greater part, Marvel's continuity has been around since the 60s. The Fantastic Four were Reed, Ben, Sue and Johnny. The Avengers had a changing roster, but the more things changed, the more they stayed the same. The X-Men had an indefinitely large pool of mutants to draw from and their roster changed, but still, the more things changed, the more they stayed the same.
Marvel shook up the status quo moreso than at any other point in the history of either Marvel or DC's long standing continuities. It started with Avengers Disassembled. But guess what - the Avengers are back. Hell, there's two or three teams of them. The Fantastic Four are still around and it's still Ben and Johnny and a married couple. The Fantastic Four has broken up before. They die, they fight, and then they come back. Two years from now, it will probably be Ben, Johnny, Sue and Reed again. The X-Men are still around and now Xavier got his X back. Marvel took a big gamble with Avengers Disassembled, House of M and Civil War and they were rewarded in the way a corporation most likes to be rewarded - their sales climbed. Every one of us have details about those stories they disapprove of, but in the overall picture, I have to at least respect the fact that they were willing to make that gamble, to tilt the axis of the Marvel Universe so radically.
Marvel's continuity will return to what we all remember for the most part. That's what it does. Any radical change is eventually lost over time. OH NO! Wolverine lost his adamantium! Oh wait, he's got it back. OH NO! Mr. Fantastic and Dr. Doom killed each other in a monumental battle! Oh wait, there they are. YAY! Magneto's one of the good guys now! Oh wait, there he is indulging his Messiah complex. AW, that's so sad - Hawkeye left the Avengers. Oh wait - he's an Avenger again. There used to be a saying, only Bucky dies forever, and that's not even true anymore.

I finally read Civil War by borrowing the trades from someone on the boat. Marvel U makes no sense now, all of the teams are screwed up and i couldnt agree more with you.Lightning Strike wrote:DC is so much better than Marvel. DC rocks with everything they have been doing, but I disagree with the GL comment. While it has been successful I prefer Kyle Rayner to Hal any day of the week. IMO GL should be changed every 30-40 years. I didn't know they brought Wally back but then again, I am now catching up on 52 with the trades.

I am, like Depluto, genetically bonded to Marvel.
Both DC and Marvel continuities get messed up all the time so arguing the merits of one over the other in perpetuity seems like arguing that the tide is currently in and therefore will remain so.
However, I prefer Marvel for a couple of reasons, I think the characters are generally better (although Batman and Superman remain two of my favourite characters ever, I relate far more to the Marvel 'blessed and cursed' brand of hero), and I think, generally, the 'key' stories/runs are better.
Dark Phoenix Saga
Elektra Saga
The Death of Gwen Stacey
The Clairmont/Miller Wolverine mini-series
Peter David on X-Factor
etc.
These stories have defined areas of the Marvel Universe in important and lasting ways, when it comes to DC I don't know what the character defining stories are (with exception some Batman tales).
Now this might just be a lack of knowledge about DC (I read bits and bobs, but nothing religeously), and I'd be intrigued to hear what the Key stories/runs are on that side of the fence (Wonder Woman, what're her 'key stories'?).

I really liked 52 (except what happens with the Question, but on that no more), and I really look forward to digging the issues out and reading through over the course of a few days. I think it was a bold experiment that on the whole worked, except for Didio being an arse and effing up the big end reveal a few months early!?!tarheelmarine wrote:I finally read Civil War by borrowing the trades from someone on the boat.
