It is a weird beast, comic art collecting. Even though Frank Miller never touched that specific piece of paper, rest assured that the connection to him will drive up the price.Heath wrote:But it's not the original Frank Miller artwork, right? It's just the color art from the colorist. Surely that wasn't applied directly to the pencils and inks.
Yes, it is colored on a copy of he inks.
Another weird example, kind of the opposite. If an inker lightboxes some pencils, the resulting artwork will be worth less than if he draws on top of the pencils. In that case it matters a lot who has touched the paper or not.

Yes, but it's still awesome. The colors were hand done. Hopefully that's not the card art.Heath wrote:But it's not the original Frank Miller artwork, right? It's just the color art from the colorist. He is still listing LOTS of goodles! I am bidding on pretty much all of them, but am hoping to actually end up with a few. If anyone REALLY wants these pieces it will be pretty easy to outbid me.

As far as I understood it was completely random which ones were reused and which ones were remade. No records exist and they were stored together.ckb wrote:Also, I'd like some assurance that some of the other color covers were the originals and not done for the card sets. Any way we can get this?
The method to recognice them is to compare both to the covers and to the cards. unfortunately, fixes just at printing time can mean that neither corresponds to the originals.
To analyse the probabilities the best is to look for unregularities. The card artists were good at imitating the originals, but colors that had bled where they shouldn't, and stuff like that, can give away a card original or identify an original.

Yes- I did a careful analysis of the Shadowman #1 cover against the book and there were differences, most notably with the splatter stains on the walls which were only colors (and therefore unique) which didn't match up. I did a similar analysis of the XO4 cover and feel confident it's the real deal.

Excellent. If we could do the same thing with the other early covers, that would be great.jmpet wrote:>Did the Shadowman #1 card art, put up as the cover disappear? I can't find it.

(Since we cannot seem to keep this in one thread, I will post here. )
I need to make some things very, very crystal clear here.
1. I do not want cash. I have never wanted cash. I said, very, very, very clearly, that I would ACCEPT cash (and ONLY at Greg's request) IF THERE WAS NO OTHER ALTERNATIVE.
2. Joe Petrilak claimed he "didn't have the books, or anything else that would make this situation work." That was my understanding, and, I believe, the board's understanding as well.
3. Based on the information I had available, I stated I would GRUDGINGLY accept $1,000 to "end this" if there was no other alternative.
4. A VERY CLEAR alternative presented itself when Joe Petrilak listed all this incredible VALIANT material for sale.
5. If the material that I am OWED has a FAIR MARKET VALUE of $1500-$2000 right now....and this is MY ESTIMATE....then why, if Joe Petrilak has $1500-$2000 fair market value worth of Valiant MATERIAL that I would GLADLY consider in LIEU of cash...how is it fair to only then give me $1,000? Why, then, does Joe Petrilak get to profit off of "material" that I own title to by right of purchase?
6. I resent VERY much the repeated attempts of Joe Petrilak to paint me as unreasonable.
Let's...again....make this abundantly clear. $1,000 is NOT...repeat, NOT....going to be able to replace the books that I am owed! It is a TOKEN payment because I, and the BOARD, was led to believe there was NO OTHER OPTION.
To break down what I am owed (all in supposed VF/NM condition, which was generally "top grade" in 1999):
Solar #1-11
Rai #1-5
Shadowman #1-3
X-O Manowar #1-6
Archer & Armstong #0 (heh)
A&A #0 Gold
Eternal Warrior #1 Gold Flat
Eternal Warrior #1 Gold Embossed
Magnus #21 Gold
Rai #9 Gold
X-O Manowar 1/2 Gold (which I STILL don't have)
X-O Manowar #0 Gold
Hard Corps #1 Gold
Doctor Mirage #1 Gold
Bloodshot #0 Gold
Shadowman #0 Gold
Armorines #0 Gold
Armorines #0 Stand Alone
Chaos Effect Alpha Red
Chaos Effect Omega Gold (which was touted in the auction as "one of the big rares!")
Deathmate Golds (all 6)
Ninjak #1 Gold
Unity #1 Gold
Unity #1 Platinum
Pred vs Magnus #1 Platinum
Psi-Lords #1 Gold
Turok #1 Gold
Plus all VVSS and the Valiant Voices.
Replacement copies/value for nearly every single post-unity to the end of the runs because they were not in "VF/NM" condition as described (the value of this, even for Turok #47 and the like, was still very small in 1999....now?)
Acclaim Reader
Valiant Voyeurs (complete set)
Armstrong Ale
Darque Brew
Acclaim Vol 2 #1 "painted variants"
Acclaim Vol 2 "Review Copies"
Valiant Heroes
Shadowman Vol 2 #1 Special Edition
Shadowman #16 Glow
Shadowman Vol 3 1-6
Shadowman #1 Price Variant
Shadowman #1 Variant
Shadowman #2 Good, Bad, Ugly
Armorines Vol 2 #1-4
Unity 2000 1-3
Unity 2000 #1 DF
THIS IS WHAT JOE PETRILAK STILL OWES ME.
Brian brought up the Unity Trades, and, frankly, I do not recall if those were in there (though they'd be included in "1 of everything printed except Unity Red"), so I'm not going to include those.
And that doesn't even INCLUDE all the promos and posters and other stuff he was supposed to include.
Looking at that list, can anyone please tell me how I could put that together, in VF/NM condition, for $1,000?
What is that list worth right now? $1500? $2000? More?
Because by all means, if anyone can sell me this list for $1,000, tell me where to send the money.
The reality is this: it's not equitable for Joe Petrilak to list for sale items that I could consider in a tradeoff for what is owed to me and then only give me "$1,000" as a token payment to "buy me off."
What should happen NOW is that people who can do this, BTE, CKB, Dan, Hillman, Greg....should assign an approximate worth on these items...all of them....NOW....and then divvy up accordingly. THAT is what's fair (though, that's weighted in Joe Petrilak's favor, because original art has gone up in value much faster than the books have. And certainly Joe Petrilak didn't pay 2007 prices for these pieces when he obtained them back in the mid to late 90's.)
There are certain pieces I'm very interested in (the Shadowman #13 cover, for example.)
Again.....since there are items that Joe Petrilak has that I am interested in, and can be APPROXIMATED as to the value of the books Joe Petrilak OWES me (since he cannot provide those books themselves)...then it is not equitable for me to accept "$1,000 cash" when "$1,000 cash" will not buy me what Joe Petrilak owes me.
And, if we arrive at that, NO CASH NEED BE EXCHANGED.
Does anyone think this is unreasonable?
Let's put it this way....if you bought, in 1985, an Amazing Spiderman #1 for $500 in "1985 Near Mint condition" (assuming the worst it could be is 2007 "VF")...but the seller never sent it to you.....and finally, in 2007, you tracked them down and said "hey, can I have my NM Spiderman #1 now?"...and they said "man, sorry, my ex-wife trashed my stuff, so I don't have it anymore, but here, I'll offer you $200 and we're good, right?"
And you'd say "um...no." And they say "ok, fine, how about $2000?" "And you say "um.....no." And they say "alright, alright, how about $5,000 cash?" And you say "well....alright, look, it it resolves this, even though that book is worth well in excess of $20,000, and you have nothing else of comparable worth to give me, fine."
And then that seller proceeds to list a Fantastic Four #1 in CGC 9.0 condition.....which would be COMPARABLE to that Spiderman #1 in "1985 NM condition".....
Wouldn't you say "wait a minute"?
