Re-Reading: X-O Manowar #1

Post by xoken »

I thought we could do a book a day (that way people can read one every day or catch up on weekends), talk about it on its own, in the context of whats next, in regards to what expectations it creates and vote on how good it is. I don't have to be the one that posts everyday. If I miss a day or if someone wants to take over please do

For voting think of your single favourite comic book (not just VALIANT) as the benchmark - thats a 10 - and grade according to that.

Make sure to mention what you like'd about the book, what you didn't, what you wish they would have done, your favourite panels, lines of dialogue, little bits of trivia etc.

While we're dragged through the demise of Solar, we get to vote on the best issues of XO. Good. Here's what the spider aliens were supposed to be. Here's still the barbarian in the armor. Here is the story that founded the flag-ship title of Valiant. I got to admit that I personally preferred other titles, but I can't avoid seing what was the attraction of this one.

I had a whole post on this typed up but it go erased :!:

To summerize:

A great innovative play on the "stranger in a strange land" motif with no corners cut or short cuts taken. The world is as foriegn and strange as it should be to someone so primitive.

Their's a nice sense of suspense and danger here. Aric is a total bad a$$ here. it's important that he takes on the aliens without the armor for most of the issue to establish that the man in the armor, not the armor itself, makes X-O tough.

A 9 :thumb:

Continuity Note: See the Solar 7 and 8 threads on why the fleet was near Saturn in Solar and near Earth in X-O.

For a discussion of the incident where Shooter said Englehart caused some continuity problems with his script, see the Solar 8 thread.

This is still one of the best first issues ever written. You really learn a lot about the Arci/X-O in a very easy to understand way. Ever time I re-read issue one, I still cait wait to read issue 2.

"This time, I have a thing to break the hard-skins with!"
"This time, their juice flows!"
"This time, I will kill them all!"

----GGGRRRRRR!!!!!!!

I am still *SQUEE* at Acclaim for how they ruined X-O!

I never was into XO, until last night.
Received my first copy of #1, pulled it out--and now it seems like a monster has emerged.

Good stuff.

Great issue and a great character. Though Rai and Harbinger came first this was easily the best new book of the pre-Unity universe. Personally by favourite Valiant issue was probably Eternal Warrior #1, maybe just because it was the first one I read, it still holds a special place in my heart.

One thing that jumped out at me - Aric had the map carved in his hand in X-O 1. That doesn't get explained until X-O 0.

I wonder of X-O 0 was written concurrently with the early X-O issues and publishing was put on the back burner. I also wonder what would cause that delay in publishing.

I think it went on the backburner so they could figure out that dang "chromium" stuff.

I noticed in one of the later issues that they solicited a Zero Issue TPB, but I don't recall ever seeing one and haven't been able to stumble back on to the "Valiant that never was" article at ValiantComics.com.

That would be an interesting book. Maybe the new guys(our heroes for bringing VALIANT back)can see about doing this? As far as the #0, I think that it was either written or plotted early, but if not, my guess is, they just did an origin that fit with what was told. Of course, I've always thought it would be great if they had a series/character "bible" laying around and that this was one of the backstories that got written before the series was published.

X-O Manowar #1 was awesome! Loved the way they potrayed Aric from a distant past and put him into the mix of future technology. This book is what hooked me on the Valiant universe. Plus, the X-O armor was a character in itself. The way it matured and evolved was very cool.
