new to valiant comics

Post by eternal economist »

Hi everybody. My name is Jamie but here I guess here I am the Eternal Economist. I'm 33 years old and will graduate college this summer w/ an economics degree. I've been collecting comics off and on for 27 years, but am new to Valiant titles having just discovered their magic about 3-4 months ago. I like just about ALL types of comics really; superhero, war, mystery/crime, humor, oddball, sex, and basically all companies too, DC, Marvel, Dark Horse, Devil's Due, Image, Malibu, Eros, Wildstorm, whatever basically, so long as it's good! My favorite charcater is Captain America (r.i.p.) and the Valiant titles I've been reading are Magnus, Solar, Turok, Eternal Warrior, the Unity saga, and Harbinger. Can anyone recommend anything else that's great?

Hola compadre.....

what an excuting time to be reading the Val. U for the first time.

I would suggest:

anything Pre-Unity (if your not sure what this means, look it up on this site)

my favorite reads:
Shadowman
Archer and Armstrong
Eternal Warrior
X-O

really every early is good!

Enjoy!

While I certainly have'nt read nearly the amount I'm sure many on the message boards have, but the earlier issues do seem much better than the later ones. Solar seems to dip off a bit into the 20's (at least so far), and Magnus seems to do the same (again, at least so far based on what I've read). I have about 100+ Valiant comics to read right now! You are right though, it is very exciting. I did register my collection too, so the next time updates are made, maybe you can look it over and recommend something I may not have.

Welcome eternal e!

I echo what Elveen said.

Everything pre-unity (and a little bit after) is great. It kind of goes down hill from there though.

I liked Bloodshot a lot myself.

Have fun!

Welcome aboard. Sounds like you're on the right track so far with your reading. I would add Shadowman, X-O and Bloodshot to your list though. Titles like Psi Lords, Geomancer, Hard Corps, Dr. Mirage and Secret Weapons were somewhat of a dissapointment. Turok is not a bad read overall, but he never lived up to his full potential IMO. Also, almost all of the titles start slipping in quality after about 30 or so issues so keep that in mind.

Before it's all over you will wont to read them all. The early books are great. But most of the last Issues sucks.

Welcome!

No one has said it, but I really liked Archer and Armstrong, at least for the first dozen issues or so. Plus, it has Barry Windsor-Smith's beautiful artwork!

Cheers!

I really like Magnus, Solar, X-O, Rai and Bloodshot. But, I don't know why, and some will laugh, but I did kinda like Dr. Mirage. But, I loved Dr. Strange growing up, and maybe that's why. :P

Also, check out the first few Magnus issues of Acclaim's run. They aren't great, but worth reading I think. And, when you see them, pick up some of the pre-hero books like Super Mario and Zelda. Maybe it's the 80's video game nerd in me, but I kinda like laughing at those.

Eternal Warriors was also decent.

It's like the "Ultimate" versions of Eternal Warrior, Timewalker and Archer and Armstrong. Archer is a petty criminal, the Immortal Enemy is a woman and Gilad and Aram's lives were 2000 years shorter than in the VH1 line, but an different take on a good concept.
