Captain America #25 & Wizard...

Post by daydreamscomics »

so the word on the streets from several industry persons and stores is this:

WIzard, which was privy to the events of Captain America #25 before it was released, put in a HUGE advance reorder (means it was reordered before it shipped to stores) on the fist print editions of Captain America #25.

the day it dropped, they were then selling them through their ebay ID for $50 for both covers. and by selling, i mean by the boatload.

i remember seeing one ID had probably 25-30 listings that were ending that first night, but really paid it no mind. turns out it was Wizard. as soon as people figured this out and word spread, Wizard pulled all their remaining auctions/listings for the book.

i find this horribly wrong. as my manager put it, they basically used insider trading to profit on this book.

what i find funny is that Wizard feels they need to cheat people, probably because the rumors of them being broke is true...

anyone else heard this story?

yep heard the same. Let me add a little more fuel to the fire. Wizard also had CGC copies avialble for sale that day AND there is a Cap tribute issue of Wizard out last week (I think). Mighty quick turn arounds on both for something nobody knew anything about about. :hm:

Heh. Yeah thats true...that whole f*** magazine is one big ad now...even the "articles" they do contain almost nothing interesting except the punchline for a product.

I'd stop getting it but its much easier to read in the toilet than a comic that's all

You're right about the actual content merely being banners in a guise (which is true of all magazine to some extent - but not as blatant).
Yep, some magazines to varying degrees...Wizard...really at the "most blatant" end of the scale.

WTF is with them splitting up the top ten for recent comics and thos emore than 5 years old?? I mean, if its hot then its hot.

And really is the She Hulk Civil War crossover that hot? I see Planet Hulk and 300 being much hotter commodities

The She-Hulk book just had a low print run, stupid otherwise, even the art is repulsive, and She-Hulk seems to be portrayed kinda slutty, its pretty funny, I bought the last 2 issues, "world without a Hulk", supposendly these are going to run right into World War Hulk WWH, so if your going to buy any piece of *SQUEE* She-Hulk book, get at least issue 18 when it drops

She-Hulk is on my pull list.

Guilty pleasure. I got hooked on her in the early 90s, and she's consistently been one of my favourite titles.

I've been liking the Slott She-Hulk quite a lot actually, though the Civil War tie in was weak. It hasn't been as good as it started, but it's still not the first title I would drop if I started dropping.

Back on track. I'm not at all surprised by the potential for Wizard insider information. Look at San Diego Comic Con. Show me the Marvel booth there. Now, pick a Wizard World. You can't spit without hitting a Marvel employee, or exclusive sketch variant. They are obviously bedfellows.

Now half-tracked. Would anyone be interested in helping start a stupid project? I'd love to create a giant list/database of the Wizard top 10 lists and their Books to Watch as well (do they still do this? When they would showcase two books that they would predict as getting hot, and usually list a supplementary book to each.).

Weird....I swear I replied to this yesterday. :?

I'm not really happy with the whole death of Cap story at all. But if you add the fact that there were a few insiders that knew about it in advance, I'm really not happy.

This is a new low for Marvel and the industry in general. If a publisher doesn't want anyone to know about an upcoming storyline, then don't tell anyone. Not your distributor (which is a monopoly, not happy about that either), not your buddy at the hype machine, not the local comic shop. Either announce it in Previews or don't tell anyone. This is the sort of thing that gets people prison sentences on Wall Street.

Joe Q keeps saying he remembers the crash of the 90's. This single event isn't the collapse of the industry or hobby. It is a solid demonstration of how greed and corruption can hurt the hobby though. The media coverage brought people into comic shops who wouldn't normally be caught dead there. The jacked up prices will dissappoint them and keep new collectors away from the market. I have no dellusions, this wouldn't have brought a huge influx of people into collecting, but it could have opened the door to a few.

Actually to their credit (or they simply didn't know what the *SQUEE* they were doing) a few issues ago they listed their picks from the past and compared them to their values (well what they list as the values) of them now. It didn't exactly reflect well in terms of long term.

I think Wizard's effect on the market (if any) is really for those savvy enough to have fast turnaround on books mentioned in various Wizards articles as possibly becoming hot and having them on ebay that week (first appearance of Lobo and Booster Gold come to mind - more recently the first Mad Man appearance which I have been looking for forever with nobody offering me one, and I finally got offered one post-article for about twice as much as I'd percieve as true value (I mentioned this and I'd add in this case I believe the seller when he said he doesn't read Wizard). I mean seriously, how many people had Lobo first appearances for a $1 or less they have been buying for a decade and shifted them in bulk for $5 -15 a pop in HG in the last few months due to his return in 52 (noted in Wizard).

It just seems to me that they have everything in place to be a very credible resource and are so overtly avoiding being one they must know their is market for being one (which would be smart).

Regarding She Hulk - I actually think that's a solid book and I'm not exactly a default fan of the character. :thumb:

That's it *SQUEE* it - I need to pull some resources and come out with some ghetto monthly paperback wrap sheet on comics! I'm going to look around for contributors soon.
I remember some really good picks they had...Avengers Annual 10, Daredevil whatever the first Elektra was...Sabretooth 10...as I remember it these were all easy to get books before Wizard mentioned them and they're pretty hot now.

Not saying they're all winnners because of course for every one of these there's 10 or 20 that go nowhere

keep in mind the valiant/wizard connection too...wizard has long been rumored (or has it been confirmed?) to have been an at least minor financial partner with valiant early in it's inception.

add to that mix that a former valiant employee is now EIC at marvel and the conspiracy theorists among us can go nuts.

i stopped buying wizard when it ceased being a magazine about comics in general and became an advertisement for marvel and dc.

Assuming that you are talking about Creatures of the Id, good luck finding that in the the HG that you require. It's a tough one.

Did Joe Q and Jimmy P. (from what we know or popular rumor) leave VALIANT with good thoughts - or spiteless?
joe q did NOT leave under good circumstances, he and layton have hard feelings that remain to this day.

jimmy p left the same time as joe q...not sure about his circumstances.

Basically, Bob claims that Joe did not meet a lot of his deadlines like he should have, so he fired him.

Nah Joe Q is the poster child of punctuality. Since he became EIC at Marvel I don't remember ANY books being late at all... :hm:
