You know, when I remove my emotional involvement from this and my personal wishes to see these characters published again, things become very muddled and I have decided that I really "do not have a clue"
what the potential for these properties is in the modern marketplace.
I guess the question is the target audience and can the company that publishes make any money? Do you take the risk of publishing so that maybe you can do video games, movies, etc. ?
Easy questions to answer when you're not investing your own money in the characters! If it was my $3-4 mil decision and my livelyhood depended on the success of this, my families future (if the investment doesn't work I am prob. fired)my retirement, etc. I don't know what decision I would make. Remember, we are not talking about Solar, Magnus, or Turok here, we are talking about Harbinger, Ninjak, Rai, and XO.

I am selling "nothing" on ebay-yet.

I dont think that we are going to see these guys in comic book form ever again. Maybe a video game, but how well do you think they could do a game about harbinger. A FPS with Bloodshot might be cool, but it would have to be really well done. Maybe an XO game, but I see any attempt at an XO game as coming off as very lame. Turok did well as a game, but that is not part of these properties. It sucks. I wish that they would make the comics again and have them be really good, but I just dont see that happening in near future.

Yeah, Turok would have been the safest bet for a successful game (and still might show up for somebody else), but a Bloodshot FPS sounds pretty good to me.DawgPhan wrote:I dont think that we are going to see these guys in comic book form ever again. I could see some kind of Magnus game that plays like Maximo.
As for comics, I just think they'd have a hard time even getting to a 10,000 print run. That's a tough nut to crack these days unless you're one of the big boys.
Hell they could start with 712 copies, I think I know where 356 people are that would buy at least 2 copies!depluto wrote:As for comics, I just think they'd have a hard time even getting to a 10,000 print run. That's a tough nut to crack these days unless you're one of the big boys.

I agree that trying to publish these characters again without some of the biggest name characters is risky at best. The comic book market is gaining a bit from where it was, but this definitely isn't the early 90's.
I like the idea of cartoons, dvds, and games for these characters but I don't see why IDT would purchase these characters for that. There just isn't ANY name recognition for the Valiant characters outside of the comic book market. If they just wanted to make a super hero cartoon series like Harbinger, or a FPS like Bloodshot, why would they need to buy the characters? Why not just create their own characters that are 'like' the Valiant characters? It wouldn't make any difference to the target audience of these products. I think that if indeed IDT bought these characters, they have a plan in a place that heavily involves comics.

If they try Comics they sure have an uphill battle. The bad taste Acclaim left in everyone's mouth doesn't help either. I hope they take a serious look at what made Valiant so popular at it's peak, otherwise it will be doomed to failure. Given the success of the Turok game franchise, video games would surely be foremost on their minds. I personally don't remember if the Shadowman game was considered a hit or not but it was a great game and I would have liked to have seen them develop more like it.

I won't be buying anything new that comes out.
Why?
I've already said, 1,000 times, the new comics have a far too low rate of return on what they cost.
Not worth it.
Hell, I don't buy BATMAN new, and I'm an A#1 Bats FAN.
If they were released for $1, or $1.50 (ROFL!!!
).....I'd buy. Absolutely.
Since that's a fantasy along the lines of me winning an Oscar, Olympics Gold AND the Heisman Trophy....I won't hold my breath.
THAT said...even the biggest names in comics fail with movies.
Catwoman, anyone? Academy Award winning, super hot actress anyone?
Flop, anyone?
Risking it on a totally unknown, and worse yet, FAILED property...? Yeahhhhh right.
And I'm the King of Siam.
