Well, he is doing very well so far IMO. This gives more HOPE to the 'retelling' of the Valiant Universe. If this NU is a success, I would propose that Valiant get 'retold' the same way.comicmark wrote:At the moment Warren Ellis plans to retell and redefine the New Universe mythos in just the one ongoing title.
Newuniversal as a model for Valiant
That's an interesting idea. Newuniversal as a model for bringing back the Valiant Universe. Perhaps it will gain some momentum and merit as newuniversal unfolds.
Valiant is the son of the New Universe.

Just saw they're getting ready for a 2nd print of newuniversal 2, due out 2-8.
Another strong sign for the title.

Its wierd that they are doing a 2nd print, all the shops in Detroit have stacks of these issues. At first I went to my most reliable shop and they didnt have any, so I ebayed the first issue. but that shop got more 1st issues in later, DOH! And now have a stack of #2 as well, other shops the same..why 2nd prints? Is Detroit just no getting into this?? I am one that didnt pick up #2, #1 was ok, but not enough to pick up the rest.

Issue #3
Just got my copy of #3. What a great book. I was a fan of the old stuff and newuniversal is now at the top of my read list every month.
I wonder what it would be like to be a lonely, muck-encrusted monster? Probably be an improvement.
I couldn't agree more on newuniversal being a great book.
I was a fan of the original stuff and collect original New U art and other related stuff.
Just read an interview in Comics Interview #36 wherein Archie Goodwin called the New Universe a brilliant concept.

ahh I think what I like about the new version is just that... it is new and fresh. Same concept but modernized. Which is pretty much why I think that this approach to any new Valiant Universe could be treated as such. The characters are being treated with dignity and respect while at the same time, being told in a 'new way'. I dunno, I just kind of like that, just taking the old ideas and bringing them up to speed with current times.
The art on these books is outstanding (IMO) as well, which is always an added bonus. I am going to read issue #3 here in a few mintues.

Picked up New Universal 1-4 the other day and was quite impressed by the story. I have some old NU titles in boxes but I was never impressed by them. I have been out of the comic collecting biz for five or six years now, aside from Planet Hulk and decided to grab these while in the shop on a whim. If you are thinking about starting on this title I highly recommend it. Nice to see that others on here appreciate it as well.

I've read #1-5 so far and I think it's excellent even though I think developments are happening a tad too slowly for me. I was a fan of the New Universe books when they came out though so I guess I am a little biased because I WANT to like this book.
Although it's a bit off subject I have the last issues (in addition to others) of Justice and Psi-Force and I think they are terrible. Probably the worst ones in their respective sets. It seems almost as if, at the time these books came out anyway, that Marvel really wanted nothing to do w/ these titles anymore. Like they sabatoged the last issues so they'd never have to bring these books back. Oh well, it just goes to show great comics will always be fondly remebered if nothing else. Anyone else want to share their fondest memories of the New Universe? I'd really like to hear them, because it has not been discussed for way too long in my opinion.

My favorite New U comics were Star Brand 1-6, which were the ones written by Jim Shooter. I loved some of the Valiant comics Shooter wrote, but Star Brand is every bit as good. DP 7 was also great, in my opinion.
I agree with you, this universe has been overlooked for too long.
I'm very disappointed that with the newuniversal stuff coming out the original comics are getting precious little attention because of it.

Absolutely these were Great Stories! Especially after they paired it down to the 4 best sellers after the 1st year, Psi-Force, Justice, Star Brand, and D.P. 7. The storyline w/ Kenneth Connel blowing up Pittsburgh was also great and really created a very tightly knit universe. Characters like Spitfire and Nightmask whose titles were cancelled proved to still be important role players even though their individual books were no longer being published. It was also very refreshing to see a comic universe where time transpired in REAL TIME. For those who are unaware, 1 year transpired between every 12 issues of a particular title. It was not precisly 1 month in between every issue, sometimes only a period of days, but Marvel made sure that 1 year of New Universe time was 1 year of real time which is why there were gaps of months between issues at times. Also, these characters were not exactly superheroes per se, but simply individuals w/ powers, just like the Valiant Universe. In many cases it was not the paranormal/s intention to fight crime or save the world, but rather to just stay alive! Wow, I guess even I have kind of forgotten how good some of these issues were.
Ken Connell destroyed Pittsburgh in Star Brand 12. That was really ground-breaking, no pun intended!
One of the coolest storylines in the New U was found in DP 7. I mean, these characters were on the run from the clinic, and spent a lot of their time fleeing in a van that belonged to one of the members of the group. I've heard it bemoaned that there were no great villians in The New U, but this was just a different type of storytelling. An interested party could pick up a complete 32 issue run of DP 7 on eBay for probably 10-15.00 including shipping and read these classic stories one after the other. You've also got the 32 issue set of Psi-Force and 32 issue set of Justice that could be had for around the same price.
Now that you have me thinking about this stuff again, I think The Pitt, the graphic novel about what happened immediately after Pittsburgh was destroyed, would certainly have to be among my favorite books from The New U.
You're right, some of the characters who lost their books were still key players.
I was fortunate enough to pick up a couple pages of original art from The Pitt on eBay last year. That gives me about ten pages of New U original art. Plus I have the acetate overlay of the cover from Justice 13. I also picked up the New Universe book cover on eBay. I actually have an extra one of those for sale on eBay at the moment as well. That's one hard to find item.
I guess I'm like some of these big Valiant collectors you read about on this site, only with The New Universe, as I have over 1,000 New Universe comics, although I think only 174 different ones were ever printed.
I really like the fact Marvel has brought these characters back, first in the series of one-shots and back-ups, then in newuniversal. I had honestly about given up on ever seeing these, my favorite characters, back in print again. It was really nice to see the Nightmask one-shot Marvel released wrap up the story that was started, I think, in Nightmask 4 and then completely ignored in issue 5. I wonder if that's some sort of record, a comic book story left completely unresolved in midstream, then finished 20 years later. Some subplots may be wrapped up in comics years later, but this was a complete story arch that was finished in a brand-new issue two decades later.
I'm very disappointed Ellis made so many changes to the main characters and story. Even though his stories are excellent, I would much rather have seen this universe brought back true to its' roots. What Ellis has done is, in my opinion, worse than what Acclaim did to the Valiant characters. At least Acclaim left the names of the alter egos the same, as opposed to Ellis changing names, and in at least one case Ellis changed the gender of a character, Nightmask. Not cool.
Yet I am grateful to Ellis for bringing these characters back, albeit his reasoning to do so was based on the intriguing premise for a universe of characters and concepts mostly conceived by one Jim Shooter. That being said, I once read an interview wherein Shooter stated they essentially did the same stuff at Valiant that had been done with The New U. Hence, The New U is the legitimate harbinger of what was to come at Valiant Comics.
