Major Change at eBay....

Post by ZephyrWasHOT!! »

Major, MAJOR development at eBay:

http://offer.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 0073377000

I noticed they were playing around with this the other day......

To quote:

"As the internet evolves, eBay continues to strike a balance between preserving transparency and protecting our Community of members. eBay has decided to change how bid history information is displayed so bad guys cannot target bidders with fake offers using this information. In certain cases, some bidders will no longer be able to view Bidder User IDs on the Bid History page. Your User ID will be shown only to you and the seller of the item you're bidding on. Other members will see an anonymous name, such as Bidder 1, applied consistently to the Bid History page."

The thing I love the most, and which reinforces the naivete that eBay continues to have, is the considerably AMATUER-ish use of the phrase "bad guys."

What is this, 1936?

What are we, 12?

You would think they might have said "those naughty, naughty doo doo heads."

I like a few of the categories in the "pop-up box" that each bidder has (Bidding Details),
but I'm not sure I like having every auction be private...
the shilling will be rampant... um... rampanter.

Looks like it doesn't go into effect until bids reach $200.00...
that keeps most VALIANT items the same as they have been.

I troll ebay motors daily and this policy began there a few months ago, I think it's ok, but I like to have an idea who I am bidding against sometimes.

Now that over a certain price there is anonymous bidding, it's good for ebay because in certain markets where the buyers know eachother, like the valiant one for example, lots of times you might not bid and move the price up if you know someone who is a known top dollar spender is already on board. You could call it the "aug002" effect.

Of course, it's in ebay's best interest to keep the price elevating.
I am selling "nothing" on ebay-yet.

Interesting... my brother was bidding on a camera lens a few weeks back, ($1800+ MSRP) and his max bid was $800 (he finally won one) BUT - for about half of the ones he lost, he got "second chance offers" from people WHO WERE NOT THE SELLER OF THE AUCTION HE WAS BIDDING ON, even though the e-mail had all the official-looking eBay logos, there was never a link to an auction, just said to contact the seller via e-mail. Maybe things like this are one of the reasons why this is happening?

:(

Some people spend their whole lives believing in fairy tales, usually because they don't want to give up the fabulous prizes.

Dear Chris,

Thank you for writing eBay in regard to catching Shill Bidding with the
new policy to safeguard member IDs.

eBay is committed to preventing shill bidding from occurring on our
site. While the public will not have access to User IDs, eBay will
continue to have the same access to information that we have today.

eBay takes the issue of shill bidding very seriously. Shill bidding is a violation that, when detected, leads to an immediate suspension or
sanction. In addition, shill bidding is a crime in many states.

We've invested heavily in shill detection systems that enable us to
proactively detect and investigate possible shill bidding. Our detection systems collect more information on selling and/or bidding activity than the public has access to, so we can detect patterns and ascertain
identities much more accurately.

We also added additional bidding information as a part of this change so that members will still be able to detect and report suspicious
activity. While we proactively search the site for shill bidding, we
will continue to investigate Community reports of suspicious behavior,
and take action where appropriate.

Thank you again for your email and for being such a valuable member of
the eBay Community! Please feel free to contact us any time you have
questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Paul L.
