Shadowman #1 "Special Edition" (appears to be Volume 3)
Can you tell me what it says in the indices inside the cover
(maybe on the first page or so)?
There's no cover price, is there a price anywhere?
Do you remember where you got the book?
Is it a "normal-sized comic"? (I know there's also a Shadowman mini...)
I'm sure a few of the guys here will probably be interested
in the details as well... Thanks!

Some fun Valiant auctions
Here’s the scoop. I have all of the Shadowman Vol. 2 #1’s in front of me as I write this. As you know the two listed in your database are the same with the exception of the cover. The differences between those two copies and the one you are questioning are as follows.
1. The cover is different in several ways, not only the artwork, but also the fact that the words Special Edition and the www.acclaim.net address appears on the front cover also. In addition the Acclaim Comics logo is different and there is no price on the cover. Actually the cover appears to be more of a wrap-around style with the back cover entirely different from the other two editions. In other words, there is no advertisement for the Risk game. Instead there is some more eerie artwork.
2. The indices on the bottom of the first page of each of the editions your familiar with both have a Vol. 2 No.1 March 1997 date with Steve Massarsky listed as the President. In the Special Edition there is no mention of Steve, instead the name of Paul Eibeler, General Manager is listed. Also the Special Edition indices has a Vol. 2 No. 1 December 1998 date. At the bottom of the indices. The words Second Printing appear. One additional difference is the following credit squeezed in under Fabian’s name as Editor-In-Chief; Special Edition Edited by Omar Banmally & Michael Marts.
3. The inside of the front cover on the editions that you are familiar with both have an ad for the Grackle and Overstreet Fan. The Special Edition has the two original covers to Shadowman Vol.2 No.1, noting that #1 was painted by Ashely Wood and # 2 was painted by Vince Evans.
4. The Special Edition then contains the exact same story as the other two, except there is no advertising to break up the story. It is just page after page of non-stop action. At the back of the comic after the story is 8 unique pages of advertising. Four pages dedicated to the Shadowman video game, two for Machines*[Wired/.For>War:}*, and two to the South Park video game. Each of these games produced of course by Acclaim.
5. The last page of the comic and the inside of the back cover are very cool full page ads for the Deadside series, again completely different from the other two editions.
I can't find a price on this edition. Judging by the advertising content, it may very well have been a promotional item to help hype the Shadowman video game.
I do not remember where I bought this, my guess would be in a 25 cent box where all of my Valiant/Acclaim comics came from after Shooter left.
This is a normal-sized comic. My copy is very sharp with the exception of a small inch and a half crease on the lower RH edge of the cover and the first two pages, hence the F/VF grade.
I hope this helps. If you can use any more info, please let me know.

So it is Shadowman Vol2 #1 2nd print. Looks like it might have come out between Vol2 and Vol3. Maybe to promote the new Shadowman game at the time.

That's what it sounds like to me...x-omatic wrote:So it is Shadowman Vol2 #1 2nd print. Looks like it might have come out between Vol2 and Vol3. Maybe to promote the new Shadowman game at the time.
the cover image is definitely Shadowman Volume 3,
but the contents of the book are Volume 2... wild stuff.
Shadowman (the video game) was released in early 1999...
(the press release for the Shadowman game was mid-1998)
So, both the "Special Edition" and the Volume 3, #1 "no cover price" variants
are probably related to the release of the game.
The Shadowman Volume 3, #1 issues "with price" are 'regular issues',
ordered by comic shops... the 'no cover price' book seems to be a video
game promotion. (Even though content is the same and covers are almost identical)
Shadowman: 2econd Coming (video game) wasn't released until March 2002,
so we can be sure that these comics are unrelated to that game.

Oh, I don't know about that. Just dip into some of that $911.11 and buy all three.

I was closer that I thought.
On the Flash 27, two thoughts:
Although you certainly are not "overrating" this book at G-, since the cover chunk missing is clearly visible, using overstreet standards I think it's a FA/G or Fair. One of these grades allows 1/10 of the front cover missing - can't remember which one right now.
You would do your auction a great service if you counted the pages and added a page count to the auction text. Reading the book and being reasonably sure all stories were complete, even if the page count is off, is also good.

Your points are well taken and a wonderful discussion could take place on each, especially the grading of comic books. While my thoughts on grading standards were primarily formed in my youth, I took them on the road so to speak in 1991-1999 by attending both the San Diego Comic-Con and the big Chicago Convention in 7 of the 9 summers.
The goal was to see how the “big dealer guys” determined the grades mint, fine, etc. and see how I measured up to them. I also spoke with Robert Overstreet and Gary Carter at their respective booths on this topic. I do not wish to go too far off topic now, but perhaps I can bore you all with a new thread on my findings and my reasoning for how I bought, and now pretty much only sell, (comics that is). I'm sure a lively exchange would evolve, or else boredom concerning such a subjective, beat to death topic.
I have no problem with The Flash comic in question being evaluated differently. I do however believe that I put in the auction description that, “the comic is complete with all of its pages and no interior pieces or chunks missing”. Generally serious buyers if they want additional information/clarification will ask follow-on questions such as the ones I have already received about the Hawkman and The Whip stories. While this comic certainly has its share of defects, it still preserves readability which many times is used as method of separation between Good- and Fair/Good.
Actually now that I think of it, I may graded this one a bit harsh.

I have been told many times since I came on board ebay about 5 years ago that I should use better pictures to gain a greater number of bids and logically a chance at a higher final value amount. I agree and hope to do this someday… maybe. Until then, I generally set my auctions at a minimum where I come out ahead and let the chips fall where they may.
I do appreciate your comments and to show a measure of thanks, if you should find anything I have up for auction in the next 30 days and choose to bid and win, I will pay for 1st class or Priority shipping.
