Complete collections and their fame...

A few weeks ago, I saw a thread about completeness of a collection. What I wanna know, is how a collection, like the Black Diamond, gets a name??? What ever happened to it anyways?

i think the individual simply came up with the name.

the black diamond collectin was sold on e-bay as a collection. guess how much it went for?

Yeah he just named it that. Like Steve's vault its just a thing he came up with, he could have 1 copy of turok 1 and still call it the vault. Good thing he doesnt.

I think the original owner of the Black Diamond Collection (Billy Walker) named it that because he is a big KISS fan. KISS had a song titled Black Diamond on their 1st album in 1974. The BD collection was retired from the list after it was sold last May. As far as I know, the new owner hasn't re-registered the collection to the inventory. Billy posted the last of his Valiant extras in B/S/T last week. Hi, Bill!

I am the Vault-Keeper because I am also a big EC Comics fan. The Vault-Keeper was the host of the comic "The Vault of Horror", from the 1950's. Besides being a Valiant Completist (of sorts), I also have many other items I keep stored in two large rooms I call "The Vault". There is no real Vault. Just two overstuffed rooms.---Steve G

So, would one consider a "collection" similar to a "pedigree"?

What's to keep someone from creating their own pedigree of high-grade Valiants? I've always been confused what one must consider to be a pedigree...is it one owner?

I think a collection can obtain a Pedigree for different reasons. Like if the collection originates from a special source like the "Gaines File Copies" of EC Comics (or Bob Layton's stash of 40 Magnus #0's). Or when a Gold or Silver Age Collection is discovered, usually with high grade key issues--like the Mile High Collection, the Bethlehem Collection, or the Larsen Collection. So I guess 'Source' & 'Rarity In High Grade' would be two determining factors regarding establishing a Pedigree for a book or collection.---Steve G

If I'm saying this right... a "Pedigreed collection" is a significant collection
of "original owner" books, collected by one individual and
stored together for an extensive length of time.

(The words 'significant' and 'extensive' are up for debate.)

The original "purpose" of the pedigree status was to indicate books
of similar physical characteristics due to identical storage for many years,
and also to "immortalize" the forward-thinking collector.
(Especially once the collection is sold/disbursed.)

The "pedigree" status is almost exclusively reserved for collections
containing comic books prior to comic collecting being widespread.
Most believe that comic collecting 'in general' was "jumpstarted" by the
emergence of Marvel in the early 1960s, and there's no doubt that
collecting was in full force by the late 1960s.

Large collections of books originally purchased prior to the 1960s
and stored together are the most likely candidates for "pedigree" status.
(The older the better...)

Collections of books from the 1960s to present aren't really 'pedigree'
in the 'spirit of the term'... because many people collect those books.
After the 1950s, collecting wasn't a "novel idea"... it was a "normal idea".

However, the replacement for 'pedigree' has come in the form of the words:
"FROM THE COLLECTION OF ..."

This "collection" is exactly that... just a collection.
The books are not necessarily one owner...
they may not have been held for a long time...
The owner, however, is potentially of interest...
maybe it's a creator's collection, or an editor, or the publisher,
or even a celebrity ("From the collection of Nicolas Cage").

The Overstreet Glossary defines Pedigree as : "A book from a famous collection e.g., Allentown, Larson, Church/Mile High, Denver, San Francisco. Cosmic Aeroplane, etc. Note: Beware of non-pedigree collections being promoted as pedigree books. Only outstanding high grade collections similar to those listed qualify."

I always took the 'Black Diamond' appellation as a reference to the difficulty given to various ski runs, a black diamond run being for very difficult trails. Since it was such a complete collection, it was very difficult to acquire. It made sense in my mind, at least

I think there was some talk about starting a Valiant Collection Hall of Fame. If Greg does it, he could bring back the Black Diamond collection as a Hall of Famer. Starting a Valiant HoF would give a sort of pedigree to the collections listed, so your ideas may not be too far off the mark.

Actually, pedigree refers to people who store their comics in a certain brand of dog food.
