No more X-O 1/2 Golds?
Canvascutie's latest auction for X-O 1/2 Gold says "Last One"...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 2263986718
If my counts are right, she sold about 20 to 25 copies on Ebay since April.
Does anyone know if multiple copies might have been sold privately?
(Or, does anyone know the total number she originally had?)

Add in the $9.99 shipping and you've got a 9.4 breaking $100.
(Not bad if those "sealed in envelope" raw books have been worthy of 9.6s...)
If we had known that there would be 25 consecutive auctions
for X-O 1/2 Gold when it was selling for $180-$250...
what would you have reasonably guessed the price would fall to?
(Yes, I know it's hard to pretend now that it's been done...
but honestly, I would have bet the book might fall to $50.)

The sealed in evvelope ones I got were possible 9.6sgreg wrote:Did you mean to type "92"?Eric Jackson wrote:I noticed that, an x/o gold 9.4 cgc sold tonight for ~72. I thought it would go for more. You gotta like the resiliancy this issue has shown, we should see the price increase now that she is done with her lot, I think anybody who got an issue for under $80 or so has done real well and will have a good investmentdino wrote:I would have said $50-60 if we had know. You did a bang up job forecasting where this one would go Greg.greg wrote:

I recall you warning me on my copy about a year ago. You didn't predict it would fall to $50 but you did warn me it was a poor book for investment and in the Valiant universe there are many books which are better investments than XO 1/2 Gold. Of course you followed up with several convincing facts which got me thinking more seriously about selling mine.
Thanks again for the heads up.

At one point it was the MOST valuable (ungraded) Valiant book on Ebay...
and I couldn't see how that was "fair" in the grand scheme of things.
Four potential 'strikes' against it:
1) It's from Wizard -- not a 100% Valiant product
2) It's a variant that's also available in a cheaper version
3) The story itself isn't considered "must read" or important
4) It's got an unknown print run
While the print run is obviously not impossibly small,
at the time the book sold for $200+ we had only seen
a few on Ebay. I believed that there were more "out there",
we just needed to figure out where. (Answer: canvascutie)

I bought an X-O 1/2 Gold offline from Canvascutie so you can add another one to her tally.
I don't know if you guys have seen any of her other stuff but she's been selling a Retailer Copy of Superman #204 (Jim Lee sketch cover) over the past few months. Here's a current one. That issue was a promo given to retailers at a European summit and supposedly that's the only place you could get it. Not only that there's only supposed to be around 50 copies out there. She's sold at least 10 of these in the last couple months and probably more like 12-15. Where does she get this stuff?!

So if XO gold1/2 is starting to drop off will XO gold #0 be the new must have champ? For a 'regular' gold edition it sure has seen a hefty price increase lately. It could surpass #1/2 within the next six monthes in terms of going price. I haven't really noticed too many come out of the wood work on eBay more than usual lately like you think it would with the mad money being thrown at this book.

XO #0 gold sells constantly for $50-65 now. Harbinger Pink is a $70+ book now while Unity red seems to be getting there again as well. Chaos Effect Red, however, looks to be the new head chesse of the valiant universe.lobo wrote:So if XO gold1/2 is starting to drop off will XO gold #0 be the new must have champ? Yea but excluding the pink and the reds which have lower printruns, it seems for a gold book with a supposed printrun of around 5000, XO #0 is getting into a class above all the other 5000 printrun golds. Why would this be?dino wrote:XO #0 gold sells constantly for $50-65 now. Harbinger Pink is a $70+ book now while Unity red seems to be getting there again as well. Its got an incredible cover. It looks great in gold. It was valiants most popular title. Lots of non valiant, non gold book collectors want it. Its seems to be rare. Its chromium which is bullet proof so cgc-ers will pay extra because its likely to be high grade. But Eternal Warrior embossed is also hovering at the same price range. Both these gold books will be great books for the future.

Based on TLC55555's auction, I'd say "raw" Harbinger #1's you buy on Ebay and submit to CGC in 9.8 condition are a good investment. Will wrote:Which books are The Money, Greg???
W-

(If anyone else is planning to give this a try...
I wouldn't suggest spending that $900 profit beforehand...)

Hmmm... what books are "good choices" in August 2004?
Well... the Solar hardcover has been back around $50 lately...
That's probably a good bet with the Dark Horse plan
for a hardcover of Gold Key's Dr. Solar in the works.
Like in the 1800s, hardcovers might just be popular again someday...

I still like the idea of "never reprinted" pre-Unity books that are cheap.
Solar #5-#9, Harbinger #7, Magnus #9-#11 & #13-#14.
Those are fantastic buys if you can find them near cover price,
or up to $5 each for the Solars... and no worries about clipped coupons.
We've seen what CGC 9.8 prices have been doing...
and if your goal is a really nice Valiant collection... look to 9.6s.
If you are a CGC fan, or potential fan...
I highly recommend CGC 9.6 condition pre-Unity books
that are priced around the guide value plus $20.
You are guaranteeing a 9.6 condition if you can find a $10 book in
CGC 9.6 for $30.
You don't have to worry it's a 9.4 or worse.
It's definitely a 9.6... and it's only guide value plus what you
would have paid anyway for grading fees/shipping.
Those are fantastic deals.
(Example: Rai #2 CGC 9.6 for about $30 recently)
Don't overpay for 9.6s, though...
they will always be below 9.8s in resale value.
You're buying to hold... to keep a really nice book in your collection.
and most 9.6s (especially modern age) are really nice books...
likely to be as good as if you hand-picked the best on the shelf that week.
Watch out for those $8+ shipping charges, though...
Factor them into your bids and make sure
you still feel like you're getting a deal.
For that matter... watch out for shipping charges period. CGC or not.
If you're building a low-cost collection, you certainly don't want to ignore
the shipping charges and pretend it's not costing an additional
10%-50% out of pocket just to own the book.
Well, that's all I can think of at the moment... enjoy!
