Marvel circulation numbers

Post by lobo »

Anyone who has read a Marvel comic has probably glossed over the 'U.S. Postal service Statement of ownership, Management and Circulation' box usually printed on the letters page. The fine print reveals interesting printrun info (average) on the title's past year in print.
I have noticed that this info only really was consistantly printed as of 1991 March titles onwards. In Current releases it seems to show up in the Febuary releases. I whated to know if Marvel ever showed this info earlier than 1991 ever because it looks like some of the late eighties issues does not have this info if it ever was printed earlier on.
Most of my 80s and 70s Marvel collection, as it is, is in storage and I'm unable to check myself. I was hoping someone knew the Marvel practice of printing this info? Maybe other publishers did it too? :?

Yes, Marvel published circulation numbers starting, I *believe*, in 1964. One that I know off the top of my head is Spiderman #108, has circulation info, 1972.

Unless it's wayyy too late, and I have the ish # wrong.

But yes, Marvel published it in the 60's....DC only published statement of ownership statements in the 50's, but excluded circulation figures.

Dunno about Gold Key, Dell, etc.

The "Standard Catalog of Comic Books - 2nd Edition"
has a lot of those circulation numbers included in the listings
for the comics. For modern books, they also have the pre-order
numbers from Capital City and Diamond... which is how I've got
a lot of the print run information on this website.

Marvel circulation numbers for Amazing Spider-man, for example,
begin appearing for issues from 1966.

Thanks Greg! I did a quick search on the internet and this looks to be an awesome reference. I wish I heard of it sooner.
