What was your first Gold/Variant
Because of the cost I waited until Valiant went down in flames to start getting any of these. My first was Magnus #21 Gold because I'm a huge fan of Magnus. Does anyone else remember their first Valiant gold or retailer incentive book?

The sad thing is I didn't have one of the variants when I was collecting VALIANTs the first time around. I had all the regular issues but the shop I went to always priced the variants sky high. Not entirely sure, but I think the first one I came across was a Harbinger #0 Pink at a comic show for 50 cents.

Same here. There was always a wall of them or they were in a display case with insane sticker prices on them. I was already spending enough on regular books so I ignored the golds.Brother J wrote:The sad thing is I didn't have one of the variants when I was collecting VALIANTs the first time around. I had a friend, who had a friend that worked for VALIANT, he gave me an A&A gold (when VALIANT was huge), I traded it for books at a comic shop. (dumb

I know, I know... but I traded it for VALIANT books (Solar #10 and a bunch of commons) does that make it a bit alright....?Daniel Jackson wrote:Shame on you....Elveen wrote:I had a friend, who had a friend that worked for VALIANT, he gave me an A&A gold (when VALIANT was huge), I traded it for books at a comic shop. Mine was HARD Corps #1 Gold. I was in high school at the time and was impressed with an article by Steve Massarsky. I forget exactly what it said but something like: 'work hard, put out a quality product, ect.'. You know the usual stuff that makes you feel good when you read someone saying it. Well i wrote to my local Senator telling him that that's how they should do it in the government as well. Then i wrote to Valiant telling them what i did. And they sent me that comic with a note saying that was a cool thing to do and "maybe we'll get some Senators as readers". Still got the note and envelope it came in. And i also got a responce back from the senator! I forget who it was, one of the senators from AZ back in the early 90's. Unfortunatly i didn't keep that letter.

I bought an XO 0 gold as my first gold book. It is signed by Jorge Gonzalez I think, and I paid $40 or $50 for it - I can't recall which. I didn't have a gold book at the time, and I REALLY wanted one.
I got my first free one at the New York Comic Con in....1995 I believe. I was showing people at the Valiant booth my Valiant Visions email newsletter, and Jon Hartz gave me a gold book - I think it was Bloodshot 0 gold, but I don't remember.
After I got to tour the Valiant Offices and meet with Paul Fairchild, he ended up sending me most lots of the gold books. I gave away most of them as prizes for contests in the Valiant Visions newsletter, but usually included an extra copy for me.
