Finally got a Valiant Cover - Quesada Solar!
I finally managed to pick up an awesome Valiant cover - Joe Quesada's Solar 29 (the Valiant Vision issue). I actually think it's the best Solar cover that Joe did. I just happened to find it mixed in with a bunch of bronze age Marvel art at a dealer table this weekend in Philly.
Check it out:

Wow! Very nice!
I like that it features half of the original style Solar with the other half the Destroyer Solar.
Yes, probably one of Joe Q's best!

One strange item - Taped to the back of the cover is a photocopy of Joe Q's original pencils before Palmiotti inked them. My first thought was that the cover was lightboxed (Quesada's pencils photocopied and inked by Palmiotti), but after a little close inspection, there is clearly real pencil under the inks (and poking out in certain spots).
All the black areas with stars have the letters BWS written in them on the photocopy (there are about 10 instances of this). Obviously, the first thing that popped into my head is that Barry did the stars and space, but that seems really menial for him.
Any body know:
a: Why there is a photocopy of the pencils on the back?
b: What would BWS could stand for other than the obvious?

Short hand for BLACK WITH STARS.
When penciling a cover or page most artist skip filling in the art with black and just write in BWS. Every inker know what that means and VOILA!!!
A space field is born!
The art could have been lightboxed, Jimmy may have lightly pencilled in the areas that he wasnt sure of or its just attached so a pencilled version
would exist.Who knows.
Great piece though.

Ha! That makes sense. I dont think it was lightboxed though as there are other markings on the piece that I dont think would be there on a lightboxed cover.marvel1 wrote:Short hand for BLACK WITH STARS.

Valiant art very often comes with a copy of the pencils (though that for some reason is more common for interiour pages). The risk of it being lightboxed is small.Brett wrote:Ha! That makes sense. PS, it would be nice to see the pencils as well.
Thanks for the info. I'll post the pencils tonight when I'm home from work.magnusr wrote:Valiant art very often comes with a copy of the pencils (though that for some reason is more common for interiour pages). RE: Joe's pencils were very light
Hey, gang--
Joe Q's pencils were very light. He definitely had a light hand during that era. I remember looking at some of them and being concerned that they'd fade before they were inked! (that the graphite would just disappear from normal handling) Fortunatley, they didn't.
One of my favorite covers as well. My favorite being the Afraid of the Darque issue with Solar in front of St.Patrick's. Barry gave Joe and Carol (VanHook) a wonderful compliment about that particular piece, saying it felt that the line art and the colors seemed of one hand.

Re: RE: Joe's pencils were very light
Thanks for the info Kevin. The light pencils could be one reason for the xerox (which I forgot to post last night - promise I will get it up here eventually).VanHook wrote:Hey, gang--

The Afraid of the Darque cover was probably my favorite Qusada Solar cover when they first came out.
Of course now it's my second favorite

Re: RE: Joe's pencils were very light
By far, my favorite as well right down to the storyline. Seeing as how that ooga booga Master Darque was involved with screwing with Solar's head, I always thought it would have been great if Joe could have drawn the entire issue.VanHook wrote:My favorite being the Afraid of the Darque issue with Solar in front of St.Patrick's.
Carol's work is always a pleasure to see. I have the two Solar colored pieces that you and Carol sent to me a while back up on my wall, matted and framed. Love 'em.
