Sketch Variant

Post by siren3-4 »

Am I the only person that really hates the sketch Variant covers ?

I don't mind a variant cover, though I don't really see any long term interest in any of them 10-20 years down the road. I could be wrong though. I do buy the color ones that appeal to me if I can find them cheap.

But the sketch variants are just irritating to me. :!:

It was OK when it was just Bats 612 that did it... then it became the "hot" thing to do.....

Now, I hate the *SQUEE* things.

Some people spend their whole lives believing in fairy tales, usually because they don't want to give up the fabulous prizes.

I quite like the look of most of them, at least the Marvel ones. Annih: Prologue and the Civil War sketch covers look great.

It depends on the artist. Jim Lee and David Finch's art don't depend on coloring to look good, so their sketch variants look awesome, whereas Micheal Turner's Civil War sketch is totally disappointing.

I believe that coloring actually hinders a lot of artists these days. They're overdoing it in too many areas, trying to make the art more and more realistic, but comics were never meant to be "realistic" so therefore it defeats the entire purpose and, in some instances, hinders the story too. Too many times I've seen a character supposed to be in action, but instead he looks posed and fake.

I just want some art that will make the story flow and look cool.

Personally I like paying more for a comic that cost them less to make. :D

The Civil War sketch is actually the straw that broke it for me. I got it in and was just real blah...

I sold it right away and I figure I will just pick up the color version because I do like the image. It just seems weird to me to make the sketch version the extra rare book and the color version the kinda rare book.

Some variants are cool and some aren't--I personally like the Batman 612 variant, but I don't own one.

If people are willing to pay for these issues then let them, afterall if it makes the comic shop owner some bucks maybe he can last longer to provide me with some stuff to buy.

I only stick with variants for series that I'm serious in wanting to keep. Obviously on the rare occassion that there is an Iron Man variant, I'll buy it, but in that case it's simply me putting together the most comprehensive IM collection around.

I don't buy variants for other pop, fad books. You are better off sticking with your core collection. I consider IM, Quasar and my Valiant Stuff my core collection, therefore I have most of everything for those runs including guest appearences.

Sure, I buy a few other things here and there as well, but lets take House of M for example. All I bought and all I will buy are the core books from the mini. No variants, no second prints, etc. But I'll pick up all the IM stuff because thats what I care about. If you guys want an example of "completist" listing, A. check out Greg's Valiant checklist ( like you haven't already) or B. Go download Advanced Iron #67 for a checklist I did for that issue of the magazine for the readership (which I've already updated a dozen times so for that matter, if you want an IM checklist PM me and I'll email it to you). Those are what I mean about comprehensive and variants that matter.

Just my .02.
