Unity ended at the end of Summer, 1992.
Rai #3 didn't "break out" until Spring of 1993.
Up until then, it was $9 or so in Wizard.
Oh wait, nevermind, that was me selling to you to finance my Mercedes.
My bad!

My first Valiant, I THINK, was Harbinger #1....but only after #4 or so had been released. The details really have gotten fuzzy. I DID buy that Harby #1 out of the quarter box, though.
I may have bought others first (and I KNOW I looked at Solar #5 when it came out, cause it was BWS), but I didn't go hog wild until April or May of '92...when you could still buy most of Pre-Unity for cover.
So I did.
By the time Unity #0 came out, I had everything.
Can't believe I passed up multiples of Harby #5 and #6 for cover. But come on, $2.50 EACH? Ripoff!
I remember grabbing a stack of Rai 3s, picking out the best one, then putting the rest back.
Argh!
The main reason I didn't buy multiples of Valiant was simple: their cover prices were twice what Marvel and DC was.
Nothing more.
Nothing less.
It still blows my mind to think back on the insanity that was Fall of 92-Summer of 93 in the comics world.
Utter insanity.

It was at that, but it was also a fun insanity to watch if you already had the good stuff.ZephyrWasHOT!! wrote:My first Valiant, I THINK, was Harbinger #1....but only after #4 or so had been released. The details really have gotten fuzzy. I DID buy that Harby #1 out of the quarter box, though.

I'd put Magnus 1-12 and Archer & Armstrong 0-12 up there.Has their ever been a better one-year run of a title than Solar had with 1-12+?
Good to see A&A getting some support. It was one of my favorites and probably Valiant's most underappreciated property. It was also the one I figured would get cancelled first which, unfortunately, is exactly what happenned. Good doesn't always translate into sales but this is a title that the new owners of Valiant should definitely bring back.

Forgive me, that was over ten years ago... so I was off a few months. I honestly can't remember when I bought it, but it was sometime after Unity ended. Close enough.ZephyrWasHOT!! wrote:Um.slym2none wrote:I'm not worried... it's at least a 9.6, well-centered, and if I can't get $65 back out of it at any time, it won't be sold.Daniel Jackson wrote:Ouch.slym2none wrote:

My first Valiant book was Bloodshot #1. I had just returned to Fort Bragg, NC from Mogadishu, Somalia and I was recovering from a ak-74 round to the 'hip' (actually a little closer to 'the middle'... yeah, THAT close to Mr. Happy). Yep, it was the BHD thing (crappy time let me tell ya). Anyways, some of my team mates came to see if they could bring me anything so I said 'books'... they said 'what kind ?'. To which I kind of quipped 'comic books'. The LCS they went to told the owner, 'hey are buddy is recovering from getting shot up over in Somalia, what books would be good reads for him ?' The owner said he had watched some of the stuff on the news and went around and collected up a short stack of books and said, 'take 'em... they are on the house'. They get back and the one that is on top of the stack is Bloodshot #1. I open it up, read the first page, flip it to a scene of a dude getting his head 'aired out' and I was hooked. Thinking to myself, "Captain America comics never looked like THIS !!' I was hooked, not for the gore but for the damned good reads. To this day it is my all time favorite book... bar none.

Good story Knight.
My first Valiant was post-unity and I want to say it was Rai and Future Force/ Magnus. Back then I got a lot of my Valiants secondhand from a used bookstore (EdMcKays--Knight should know this store), and I remember getting a lot of RFF and Magnus because I really liked the Malev storyline.
RFF/Magnus got me hooked into getting more secondhand issues suchs as X-O, Hard Corps, Bloodshot.
After that, I was hooked on Valiant til Birthquake.

My first one was also Bloodshot #1. I had basically just gotten into comics, and read some cool articles about Valiant. Bought it from a place called 'Books, Comics, and Records' in Mesa,AZ. Picked out the most centered one. Had them double bag it for my bike ride home. I washed my hands before putting it right into a comic bag/board. Didn't read it 'till a couple days later. And then almost holding my breath so i wouldn't breath on it. Yea... i thought it would be worth $500 some day...
But it got me into Valiants

Dragon's Lair is still there, by far the best store in Fayetteville. The owner is even able to get top comics creators to the store. When I was a kid he was able to get Joe Quesada down there.
The place across Cross Creek moved back in 96-97 to where the dollar theatre was and eventually they shut down.
