README FIRST: The Re-Reading Valiant Project

Post by greg »

In the previous incarnation of the ValiantComics.com Message Boards,
board member "ManOfTheAtom" painstakingly posted a week-by-week
plan for re-reading the Valiant Universe in the order it was originally
written/published. (Thanks, ManOfTheAtom!!!)

Unfortunately, the loss of the first messageboard meant the loss
of the Re-Reading Valiant plan...

However, the first 25 weeks of the plan were salvaged from an older backup database,
and they have been posted here for those who might be interested in
re-reading the Valiant Universe stories and making comments along
the way...
(More weeks will follow, especially as they are needed.)

Most weeks have four or five issues suggested, a few have more...

The goal, of course, is to "turn back the clock" and enjoy the books!

This is great! I've recently found a bag of Valiant books I bought in the flea market while cleaning my room. They aren't very important issues, but I always have something to say about 'em.

Would you happen to have my Solar #1-#4 summaries too?

I can't find them in my hd :(

Man, I'd really love to start doing this ... but I'm too busy comparing and contrasting the Spanish colonization and the English colonization of the New World! Gah!

Whoa, my brain hurts, I must have an idea....

What if we combined this with the comic scanning project?????

Scan all the books for a week, host those comics somewhere, and replace them for the next week????

That way people could end up downloading all the comics eventually, and we could have a comprehensive guide to the comic scanning!

I know its probably been done before and I was looking here for a start, but Im not finding what Im looking for quickly. Ive read quite a few Valiants...but, honestly, I have never read a ton of them. I feel kind of sleazy acting like a Valiant fan when I truly have never seen the whole story or at least the pre-Unities to know what the heck is being talked about more acurately. So, recently, I started reading them. I just read Magnus 1-10. Great stuff....but I dont want to just keep reading Magnus and discover I need to be reading other issues at the same time to get the full effect.

Is there a chart on what order Valiants should be read in? I see there are countless reviews here indicating fan reaction and summary to particular issues. But is there a chart on where to begin and how to keep following all the way to the end?

If so...any thought of making it a sticky?

Any help is appreciated...

ManOfTheAtom has provided a reading order based on the storylines above.

Here is list is based on the order the books were released,
the way they would have been read buying them each month...

Thanks to both of you. :thumb:

I was looking for the latter probably a bit more. I was surprised to see Timewalker #0 as the 1st book to read, seeing how it came out in 1996. I actually read it tonight and must admit, it looks like an event that is going somewhere, but I guess without knowing more....I didnt get it.

I should have found Greg's list now that I seen it. But, thanks for helping me along. Im going to try and continue reading.

I havent been in many Valiant discussions because I cannot say so with enough knowledge. Now that I have a list to follow, I should be able to join in more discussions, the more I read or re-read.

In any event, I do want to be known as a fan. But probably the majority of the books I had read, was way back when they came out. Im going to work on changing that. 8-)

How is Captain Johner & The Aliens connected to the Valiant Universe? I never bothered reading it, as I figured there wasn't any connection.

Doesn't it take place in the same univese as Magnus?

There's no connection but it might be considered a Gold Key/Pre VALIANT series.

Do any of the Valiant books reference anything in the series? I'm just wondering if I should pick it up.

No, but if you can find it get it, it's not a bad story. I for one really liked it.

Question:

Shouldn't The VALIANT Era Companion #1 be read before Solar #10? IIRC, VEC showed Gil & Joe Nicoletti's first meeting in 'Nam, plus set the stage for their later meeting at Harbinger.

Awesome list, btw--I'm currently re-reading my Valiant collection, so this list will make things a lot easier.

Another question:

Are there any indications that PunX or the Outcast occur in the VH1 universe? I have the Outcast Special & didn't see any relation between it & the other books (that I remember), & never picked up PunX for the same reason.

Thanks.

PunX is a satire/parody.

There was a preview story in Previews with Solar speaking on the phone with someone at Acclaim about PunX in which he says something to the effect of "after all, I put up with that Unity crap".

I've always seen Outcast as part of the deal to have Breyfogle on Bloodshot. Like "if you do Bloodshot we'll let publish something you come up with".

Hmmm, so I wonder where this new Harbinger story is going to fit in?

It might depend on if the powers that be start the entire universe over or if they continue as is..

What does everyone else think?? :hm:

If it is set in a Post Unity continuity that ignores everything after Shooter left, then it most likely fits in after Harbinger #10 (Story: Jim Shooter and David Lapham) plus 15 years.
