Artists that promise more than they can deliver

I hope this thread helps others to not get scammed by an artist. I know I am not the only one to get taken so I hope others post artists to stay clear from.
Bart Sears - Even though he said 2 weeks I did fianlly get my Magnus & Solar commission after 5 months. He even gave me a X-O 14 page to say sorry it took so long. Great guy and great artwork. He just needs to work on communication. If I was kept informed I would not have felt the way I did. Just be aware that a commission from him will probably take much longer than stated.

Loosing faith is such a horrible thing. Sorry to hear it turned out so bad. I hope Mr Sears at least answers you. I've had some cases where people I trusted turned out disappointing. The extreme case is Art Nichols. Not only should you stay clear of him, but whoever gets his contact information is hereby asked please to share it with his victims on this board.

For more background, you can look a bit down on this page:

That's just pathetic. You're not just a paying client, you're a fan. I hope these guys feel pretty bad about what happened.

It's entirely possible that they simply became overwhelmed in their personal lives and didn't have the time to get to these, but they should have at least refunded monies with an apology. It's hard to do this with money orders if your bookkeeping is bad, but refunding paypal and credit card payments is a cinch.

Truly sad.

Incidentally, is it common for comic book artists to actively seek art commissions? This sounds a tad suspicious to begin with. I'd think that, if they have the time to do commissioned art, they're probably unemployed at the moment and, therefore, very money hungry.

A lot of times, artists want to get as much work in as possible, because editors change their minds, books get cancelled, etc. Too often they take on too much. It's also (right or wrong) easier to justify delaying a fan than the editor that gives you work that makes your house payment each month. In a perfect world, they should be the same, but it's often not the case.

Commissions can be nice because they're typically one-off pieces that can be done quickly and you can make a little extra cash--for many people it's not reported income, so it's tax free.

Plus, they don't have the same level of thought of panel-to-panel continuity that regular comics has to have.

I design sports pages for the newspaper in Jacksonville, including special sections and stuff. We got the idea to do the front page of our Jaguars section like an old Marvel What If comic last year, and since Don Perlin lives in Jax we asked him if he would do it.

It turned out great, and he was a blast to work with (brought his portfolio to the office, told some cool stories and was a real pro, which comes in handy when you're dealing with deadlines). A photographer and I came up with the idea, and we won design citations that month - extra money, cool!

I'm not aware if he has a web site or not, but his number is in the book.

I can scour up a picture of that Jags page if anyone here wants to post it.

Thats a great concept for a newspaper section, and Perlins art looks great as usual.
