Ok, I won the 4 Unity TPBs with Slipcover on Ebay. I was wondering what you guys would recommend for me to read now? I plan on picking up the early X-O books cause I just love that character. Which other early Valiant books were good? Solar?? Harbinger??

Magnus is my favourite by far.
Solar is great too.
You should read every preunity book.
Manoftheatom has done a great job making a schedule of what order to read the books in the "rereading valiant universe" section.
I would say that Magnus 0-12, Solar 1-10, Harbinger 0-4, Rai 0-4, XO 1-4, shadowman 1-4 are bare bones essentials.

Also, if your going to buy these books I would highly suggest asking on the board because most are avaliable in trade paperbacks that a lot of the board members have in caseloads.
Magnus 0 is not avliable in any other form than the book.
Magnus 1-4 & 5-8 might be easier to get a hold off in books without coupons than the trade. 9-12 are very easy to find in book format.
Solar are also best in books but alpha and omega is easy to get in trade format.
xo, harby, shadowman, rai are easy to find in trades for very cheap.

Why bother picking which ones to buy? Just go ahead and collect them all. That is the easiest thing to do. That way you will have everthing and sit awake anight wondering about the such Valiant classics as the "Nut-Copter", the fantastic "Boob-alizer", and the wonderfully awesome "XO Bike." Anyway. Welcome to the board. I would recomend that you head over the the "Buy/Sell?Trade" area and check out some of those threads. There is one guy selling every valiant. I am sure he has some of what you need. There are also several .25 sales going on. Then when you get a sweet collection working you can put your inventory up on the inventory page for everyone to see. See, isnt this going to be fun?

ALL the pre-Unity books are amazing, almost certainly because they were all plotted and written by Jim Shooter. What's fantastic and unique about them, though, is that they're each VERY different. I have to be in a certain mood to enjoy Harbinger and another mood entirely to enjoy Solar.
The only pre-Unity title I've never gotten into is Shadowman but, judging by how many people enjoy that title, it's clear that I just haven't been in the right mood to enjoy it. I recommend obtaining all the first issues first, and seeing which ones you're in the mood to follow further. As a word of caution though, don't read Rai until you've read up to Magnus #8.
Enjoy!!!

Re: Just reread Unity, I want more VH-1 books!!
As a rule of thumb, if you look on the cover gallery on this site and see anything published before or just after the cover dates on Unity #0 get it. You'll get a quality and feel consistant with those Unity issues because Jim Shooter was at the helm of the company (and wrote most of the issues himself!). The titles published at the time wereMiamiLoco wrote:Ok, I won the 4 Unity TPBs with Slipcover on Ebay. I was wondering what you guys would recommend for me to read now? Magnus (Shooter was actually involved in this book all the way up to 20)
Solar
X-O
Harbnger (issues 1-4 are in a trade the rest you have to get individual issues of)
Shadowman
Rai (1-8 form one great storyline, #0 is one of the all time classics; some of this is reprinted in a Rai trade)
Archer & Armstrong (1-12 work as one storyline done by Barry Windsor Smith)
Eternal Warrior (#1-3)
I'm not sure how expensive the indivdual issues are since I've rarely seen them in the back issues. I know most of the post-unity stuff is in the 10 and 50 cent discount bins but most of those are a lot more common.
