I’m so confused by this thread and the guy that posted the video with only 15 views. I was 1:30 in and he still didn’t say anything substantive.

I watched the whole thing. He sounds convincing but never actually backs anything up. He teases that we are supposed to be reading between the lines about so much more coming.nycjadie wrote: Thu Jan 23, 2025 10:43 pm I’m so confused by this thread and the guy that posted the video with only 15 views. He talks a little bit about you.

I listened. I'm still confused. He mentions a Kickstarter and names, and is talking about negativity and lack of critical thinking.Chiclo wrote: Fri Jan 24, 2025 4:47 amI watched the whole thing. He never introduces what he is talking about. I'm assuming it's something about Defiant. Still, that's just me reading between the lines.
I guess I don't get riled up by a few loud apples.

That was a great interview with JayJay! Her contributions to the technical aspects and creative origins of Valiant are fascinating to listen to.

Same here. I scratch the rust off the memories only for it to grow rusty agian 10 minutes laternycjadie wrote: Tue Jan 21, 2025 8:23 pm I listened to this today. Lots of fun.
I didn’t know the Solar Alpha Omega page was like 6 feet, or that it was sold at Sotheby’s. Maybe Heritage?
I’m curious where this giant cache of Marvel colors went.
I would totally buy JJ’s book on coloring in the industry.
My memories are faded and distorted with time. If she made any mistakes, I’m sure it was similar reaching in to the depths of memory. And not important ones,

I would love to see the original art of that in person too. Hope to get you on the show soon too.

Re: Jay Jay interview and Valiant/Defiant talk
One thing I was thinking about from the interview, I'm actually a fan of the old Valiant house style.
I liked that even what would be considered the 'worst' art from pre-Unity would still always meet a baseline level of solid and clear storytelling with proportions that were 'on model' with the rest of the books.
All the super-stylish art that's taken over comics since Image has both positive and negative effects. Sure, some of it is very pretty eye candy that's just fun to look at. But on the flip side things like basic storytelling and design coherence can suffer which leads to an overall worse experience for a reader. Meaning someone reading for the story and the art, not just the art.
Give me the pre-Unity house style over most of that stuff any day of the week. I also think there's more art diversity in pre-Unity than we give credit to. Just look at Unity. BWS to Lapham/Mayo to Ernie Colon to John Dixon. All very different drawing and inking styles. Yet due to the stricter adherence to classic storytelling rules and staying to a 'realistic' (not cartoony) proportional design it reads as a very coherent and unified story.

Agreed as well. The style is what first sucked me in.
