X-O Manowar: Invictus #1
Pretty good effort here. Cloonrad (I believe they’re referred to) continue on from the previous mini series. XO and some of the prisoners from the Romania ship land on a hostile planet where Aric has to teach them how to hunt. Aric is dead set on waging war on the Romanus and has no plans to stay on this planet for long.
Shanhara is damaged from the previous battle and has stopped communicating with Aric. PLEASE LET THIS BE PERMANENT!!! I’m not a fan of ‘talking Shanhara’ particularly after the Hallum run.
Ivan Timewalker makes a brief appearance but Aric refuses to help him. Meanwhile the Romanus are using Nimane to set a trap for Aric.
Just as it ends, a mysterious character arrives who wants to speak with Aric, more on this in issue 2!
Once again, Alien working hard to bring back continuity into the books, even down to Aric’s body scars. Quality paper stock and useful recap at the start of the book.
No Liam Sharp on the book but the art by Furukuwa is clear and dynamic. The only thing I didn’t like about the book was the manga faces.
3.75/5 - check it out and support Alien when they deliver

This is a more constructive critique than the other thread. Thanks.

I felt like the story tried to cover too much ground and ended up hopping from plot to plot. The art was not really my thing either. I'm holding out hope for the rest of the series though.

In the other thread you mention XO #57, remind me of the significance of that issue? You mean from the original VH1?depluto wrote: Sun May 26, 2024 6:11 am I felt like the story tried to cover too much ground and ended up hopping from plot to plot. First appearance of Hotwire, an earnestly angry villain for no apparent reason other than he might or might not have been attracted to Aric.

Disclaimer: I love that issue because it’s so bad it’s awesome.

Ah sorry it was 57 and 58 … two issues and a lot of grimacing.

Further disclaimer … if I’m at a con and can’t find any decent stuff to buy I will sometimes find a terrible artist and pay them to do a Hotwire sketch cover. Although one guy did a truly fantastic one once for $20.

I loved pretty much everything about this (both art and story were on point). Did more than enough to establish the core characters and make me care about them (Aric, Thrya, and Nimane). Enjoyed the nod to the broader connected universe with Ivar Timewalker showing up.
Thoughts on who the mysterious character is at the end of the issue? Some have pointed to this potentially being Livewire but I'm really not sure.
I don't know a lot about Nimane so looking forward to reading more of her in future stories. She's a character with loads of potential imo.
