How bad is it to take a CGC graded comic out of its casing and read it?

I don't own any professionally graded comics, but if I did, there would be a good chance I'd want to take it out and read it, as I would most likely get something I'd be interested in. My question is, is this sort of thing frowned upon? I most likely wouldn't particularly care about selling it later on, so would it even be worth it to get a graded comic in the first place, or should I just look for a non-graded copy any day?

In most cases, it would probably be easier to read a reprint or digital version of the same comic. If you’ve got something rare or particularly collectable, I’d advise against it. If you have something common or of little collector interest, hey man, it’s your comic.

I’ve cracked open cases to read, but that’s because the books were reader copies. I have raw books I don’t touch. Better to grab a reader copy, or a digital copy.

I agree with these guys. CGC graded books are sort of the second half of the idea, "one to read, one to keep".

You can read your "keeper" books, but if that was your plan, it's cheaper just to buy "one to read" and avoid graded comics altogether.

Does this still apply to old valuable comics that one runs the risk of buying an incomplete copy if not graded and verified as complete?

Well, if you want to be fancy, sure, two CGC graded books would supply what you need for "one to read, one to keep".
