DBS's 100% CONFIRMED "Rare" Print Run Info

Post by DirtbagSailor »

The following print runs have been 100% CONFIRMED by Dinesh, Valiant staff/employees, or in some cases the individual who funded/coordinate actual production/distribution.

This list will be updated as time progresses and NEW info becomes available.
NOTE: As a matter of policy, Valiant Entertainment does not share print run information. In some cases, we have EXACT numbers, while in other cases, we have approximate/estimated numbers. For example, Dinesh CONFIRMED that 200 copies of Bloodshot Salvation #1 (Suayan Brushed Metal 1:250) were printed, and data/math would indicate that Ninja-K #1 (Suayan Brushed Metal 1:250) (for example) SHOULD have <200 printed copies. Subsequent conversations with Valiant employees revealed that (as of 30 JUN 20) no Brushed Metal had more than 180 copies printed. SO, while the exact number is a unknown, we can say in with VERY STRONG confidence that 180-200 copies is where that number actually is.
NOTE: While these are the CONFIRMED numbers of printed copies, it is important to understand that the actual number of copies in circulation is likely less than the print run.

Retailers might have qualified for example, 250 copies of a book with a CONFIRMED print run of 500 copies. The EXTRA copies would have been used to cover damages, given as compensation books to artists/partners, and the remaining books would be stored until destroyed.

Bottom line: the actual quantity in circulation of a given book will be LESS than the CONFIRMED print run.
I will continue to seek reliable information and share it here.

NOTE 1: Dinesh CONFIRMED that 200 copies of Bloodshot Salvation #1 (Suayan Brushed Metal 1:250) were printed, and data/math would indicate that Ninja-K #1 (Suayan Brushed Metal 1:250) (for example) SHOULD have <200 printed copies. Subsequent conversations with Valiant employees revealed that (as of 30 JUN 20) no Brushed Metal had more than 180 copies printed. SO, while the exact number is a unknown, we can say in with VERY STRONG confidence that 180-200 copies is where that number actually is.

180-200 copies - Bloodshot (2019) #1 (Meyers Carbon Fiber 1:250)
NOTE 1: The information obtained from sources within Valiant confirmed that the Glass and Carbon Fiber 1:250 variants were in the "SAME BALLPARK" as the Brushed Metal 1:250 variants, which means that NO MORE than 180-200 copies were printed/distributed. The actual quantity is likely lower for some; but the conservative "best estimate" is the 180-200 copy range.

500 copies - Bloodshot Reborn #10 (Lemire 1:100 Line Variant)
NOTE: Bloodshot Reborn #14 (Giorello 1:50 B&W Sketch Variant) had approx. 200 copies that retailers qualified for. Diamond requested 350 copies anticipating re-orders, damages, etc., and Valiant printed 500 anticipating the same. However, Dinesh confirmed that the excess copies were destroyed, so the real number is below 500 copies.

500 copies - Bloodshot Reborn #14 (Robertson 1:20)
500 copies - Harbinger #8 (Lemire 1:125 Line Variant)
NOTE: Dinesh stated that retailers qualified/ordered 180 copies of the Harbinger #8 (Lemire 1:125 Line Variant). At the time, 1,000 copies were generally printed for variants like this; however, Dinesh believes that he made an exception to this policy/rule and 500 were printed. It is unknown if the additional copies were distributed to staff, artists, writers, partners, gifts, etc.

Store and/or Convention Exclusives: 100 copies or LESS
3-10 known copies - Ninjak #0 (NYCC Unreleased Edition)
NOTE #1: Supposedly all copies of Ninjak vs the Valiant Universe #0 (NYCC Unreleased Edition) were destroyed. This clearly did NOT happen, as a FEW copies still exist and/or have been rarely made available on eBay.
NOTE #2: Greg owns four raw copies of this book. There are five graded copies in the census (four Universal and one Signature Series). This confirms at least NINE known copies.
50 copies - Bloodshot (2019) #1 (Kitson Shazam Comics/NYCC 2019 B&W Virgin)
NOTE #1: 5 copies were given to the cover artist as “Comp” books. The remaining 45 copies are in circulation.

Re: DBS's 100% CONFIRMED "Rare" Print Run Info

Post by DirtbagSailor »

So after a week of phone calls and discussion, I have been told the following:

1. Comichron does NOT receive print run information from Diamond for many publisher (including Valiant); they receive ranked order based on reported sales, but NOT the actual sales numbers themselves. The numbers we see on Comichron are an "ESTIMATE" based on a formula/algorithm, and are often 4 - 15% LOWER than what the real numbers are (see also: WRONG). So a possible (yet still incorrect) rule of thumb (my opinion) would be to multiple Chomichron's listed print run for a given issue by +7%. YES, it is "wrong," but it is closer to "right" than we otherwise will have. It ALSO explains slightly higher confirmed variant print run numbers exist than what we initially expected/calculated.

2. Diamond's rankings/numbers include North America AND the UK.

3. The Quantum and Woody #1 (1:100 Fools Gold) is 100% RARE! I do not have print run information or data to verify this, but was told by a reliable source that it is indeed rare. (DBS NOTE: This makes sense when you think about it).

4. Valiant audits/tracks high-end incentive variants, and has reportedly "tightened up" the variant game from where it was a few years ago (anyone remember the CRAZY high supply of A&A #5 (B&W 1:50) which now sells for $5.99?). As a result, 1:50s and 1:100s released in the past 1-3 years SHOULD have less visible defects and a subsequent increased CGC/CBCS grading potential for collectors. If true, this would also indicate that the older 1:50s and 1:100s are potentially HARDER to find in 9.8 condition, so best of luck in your hunt for that Unity #5 (Suayan 1:100) you have always wanted.

I'd add the X-O Manowar Humble Bundle "Unsigned" to your list. While we don't have a print run number on those, you can check CGC and see that there are two blue lable and two sig series (yellow label) that are out there.

They exist.

Great list! Already #Bookmarked

What about the Secret Weapons 1:100?

With less than 25k sold copies of SW #1 (First Printing), that incentive should be somewhere on your list, no?

If I am not mistaken, this list is only for known (confirmed) print runs. I think there are a lot of comics that “could” be on the list. But, until someone in the know says something.... then they don’t make this list.

Oh, I don't know. Keeping in mind how popular this series was and that it was one of the final series published by the old crew I was (and am still) thinking we might have a confirmed number somewhere and if not yet, then maybe it would be nice to get it confirmed.

The 1:100 isn't even listed in Magnus' TOP 1000 list while it is listing the 1:20 and 1:50. It doesn't make much sense.

I can’t remember for sure, but I think the SS Secret Weapons 1:100 was a LW (linewide) variant. So, that means that there are probably way more printed than a regular 1:50 (and possibly 1:20) variant.

Hmm, I don't think so. I didn't mark it as such on my side.

Here it says "the SECRET WEAPONS #1 VALIANT VALIDATED SIGNATURE SERIES edition will be strictly limited to the number of qualifying retailer orders. Contact your local retailer today to reserve your copy."

Meaning there aren't many of it and it's very HTF, too.

The Linewide books are in the 1000 rarest incentive covers.

There is no 1:100 Secret Weapons incentive in my list of the 940 or incentive covers (nor does Greg have one listed in the price guide).

I am a bit confused about what ended up happening with this book as it was solicited as a 1:100 book and also as VEI’s first signature series book. Yet 34 ended up in CGC Signature series slabs (and 2 in qualified slabs) and a bunch in CGCS autographed slabs. There were also a few released that were not in slabs but still autographed (I have never seen a non-autographed copy).

Since I am not sure if it ended up being a regular incentive or how witnessed signatures were slabbed (as if it went out signed all graded copies would be qualified) so I left it off the regular incentive cover list and chose to think or it more like a gold/retailer/convention cover. I don’t know if it was a straight 1:100 incentive or if it ended up being distributed differently or in multiple ways.

I guess you could say my 1000 incentive covers is all non-autographed incentives

I have one of the green labels for this SS comic book. This was a weird one.... they mailed you the signature book already signed and you could send to CGC to get certified with a yellow label within a certain amount of time (30 days? 60 days?). Anyway, there was a cut off date. So,CGC gave it a yellow “witnessed label” even though they didn’t actually witness the signature. I sent mine to CGC and just missed the deadline so I ended up with a green label. This comic does have a raised “seal” that was stamped into the cover.

Well I was with Dino at SDCC when he handed CGC a stack of these so that some would be in the census and it was one of his copies that landed that 8.0 and was like WTF? when they came back

From what I can remember, Valiant had a CGC witness at the time, and they worked out a deal with CGC that they could be signed and stamped (I think they were stamped), and sent out to the retailers and would be accepted by CGC up until a specific date. All books that were produced were signed and witnessed properly. Do believe they went through a verification to make sure that there were no unsigned books too. Then, All books that were sent in to CGC, would be given the yellow "sig series" banner. Those green banners are those that missed the cut off date. http://valiantentertainment.com/2017/05 ... june-28th/

Side note: This is done now a days with a big CGC plastic bag, which are mainly used at Cons. Mainly used for multiple signatures at a Con, but would work in this type of situation. Bag can only be opened once, thus securing the book for travel, or multiple signatures. I used something like this when I had my Kotaki signature done on my X-O Manowar #15 1:50. It's a system I would happily use again.

Valiant seems to have done a lot of “firsts” in the comic world when making comics.

For instance:

Bloodshot #1 first Chromium comic cover
X-O #1 Brushed Metal first Metal cover
Bloodshot #1 carbon fiber (first carbon fiber cover)

Was L&DofTH #1 Glass cover the first Glass ever in the comic industry?

Am I missing any other “firsts” with materials in making the comic books?
I’m not sure if Q&W Most Variant cover would count?
