Congrats! The only explanation for that mix of books is that they are the ones you need. Puzzle pieces! :)

Absolutely, Greg! They fill holes. 2 books were rejected, but this is good, as it satisfies about 10% of the books on my wishlist.

I looked up the census data on Greg's site, and to illustrate how hard it is to pull these in 9.8, here is what is out there.

BS 20 - 2 9.8s
Geomancer 5 - 2 9.8s
Harbinger 28 - 6 9.8s
Hard corps 21 - 3 9.8s
Hard corps 28 - 3 9.8s
Magnus 40 - 3 9.8s
Magnus 55 - 5 9.8s
Ninjak 12 Finally! - 3 9.8s
Turok 11 - 4 9.8s
X-O Database - 5 9.8s (this one eluded me for some time)
X-O 35 - 1 9.8!
X-O 46 - 1 9.8!
X-O 47 - 3 9.8s
X-O 49 - 3 9.8s
X-O 54 - 1 9.8!

Magic Ice Age 2, 3 - I believe these are the first!
Magic Fallen 1 - 1 9.8!
Magic Shadow Mage 2-4 - I believe there is only 1 9.8 for the first issue, the rest are firsts!
Magic Wayfarer 4 - I believe this is the first!
Ninjak V2 4 - I believe this is the first!

So much faster than mine! All of those are coming from ECCC this year, right? Let me guess, didn't send them through to get pressed? I guess those variant covers were thicker stock, so it wouldn't be needed.

Correct, no press on these. Still, bummed about those 2 9.6s! No grader notes either!

I do have one more set of 6 SS old school Valiant books signed by Sean Chen. I do believe I requested those to be pressed, and they are stuck in "Received" still.

Would that be a quick press through ccs? Or do you do the full press?

I use Modern Press, which is $12 per book. I figure when investing that much, the extra $4 is justifiable.

Re: Nycjadie's CGC 2019 Submissions

Post by nycjadie »

I neglected to post my last several submissions. I just submitted this week 25 silver age Marvel that I hope to come in at 9.4-9.8, most of which in the 9.6 category.

At the con last weekend, I submitted 13-14 SS books, including 2 Harbinger 1s (Jim Shooter), and a Hard Corps 1 Gold/regular (Jim Lee). The Harbinger 1s won't come in 9.8, but we'll see what a press can do. I got a 8.5 cheap at a shop, and cracked it open. Fingers crossed. It clearly was not pressed. I'm guessing a 9.4, but if it comes back 9.6, I'll be doing pirouettes.

Yesterday, I dropped a mint on 60 silver age books, with a few bronze thrown in. All Marvel. In my view, all 9.6-9.8 with a press. That will cost me another mint to press and grade, but if only a 5-6 come in 9.8, then it will be well worth it, and can cover the cost.

I've come up with my own algorithm for investing in older books. I look at the book and determine what the grade I think might be with a press, and level it down one from there. Then I look at eBay sales for that grade, and add the appropriate press/grade fees. If it comes out at 2/3 of the price or less, I am willing to roll the dice. For example, I see a silver age Marvel common for $50. It looks like I can get a 9.6 if I press it, but there is a chance that it could get a 9.8. I price it as a 9.4 (say $150), then add the press/grade fees ($50). That's the sweet spot. I will invest $100 for what I can likely sell for $150 (not great). However, chances are I will get a 9.6 ($250-300 - great investment), or possibly a 9.8 ($500+ - awesome investment). The trick is to be able to grade reliably. I've been pretty good at the high end. Recent calculations show I'm accurate at CGC in estimating high end grades about 96% of the time. Lower grades, however, I'm not very good, and tend to undergrade.

My submission this week:
Magnus GK 28
Heroes, Inc. Presents Cannon nn
Captain America 106, 108, 123
Conan the Barbarian 1 (7.5 or higher) - I'll break even at a 7.0, but thinking it has 9.0 potential.
Incredible Hulk 112, 114, 117, 120
Iron Man 36, 42
Hero for Hire 2
Mighty Thor 184, 186, 187, 190
Nick Fury 8, 11, 17
Prince Namor 7, 15
Strange Tales 166
Tales of Asgard 1
Tales to Astonish 95

Fingers crossed!

A few ECCC submissions finally received this week (from March), all 9.8s signed by Sean Chen:

Bloodshot 27, 28
Harbinger 28, 30
Rai 11, 13

Nothing special other than Sean signed them and they are in perfect condition. :thumb:

Have another submission I'm submitting to CGC this week:
ASM 141, 193, 198-200, 299
Howard the Duck 2
Inhumans 1
Iron Man 128
Marvel Spotlight v2 6, 7
Marvel Team Up 66
Rai 0 Glossy
Silver Surfer 44
Star Wars 58, 59, 60, 62, 67, 77, 73
Wolverine Mini 1, 3, 4

Hoping for 9.8s across the board on these, but I realize I might get a few 9.6s, like on the 299. It's an investment in books I pick up from this shop. Nothing is a bargain, but he lets me inspect the books. The Rai 0 was a steal though. $20 for a glossy. Likely a 9.6, but fingers crossed on a 9.8. Inhumans also likely a 9.6.

Re: Nycjadie's CGC 2019 Submissions

Had a fun CBCS submission just post as shipped today. I took advantage of a recent promotion. Wasn’t much, but I planned on submitting them anyway.

Livewire 1 Glass
Livewire 1 Glass Verified Signature
Toyo 1 Glass
Fallen World 1 Glass
Bloodshot Rising Spirit 1 Glass Verified Signature (double First signed)

All came in 9.8. Would love a BRS blue label. We shall see.
