CHECKLIST: Life & Death of Toyo Harada #1

Post by DirtbagSailor »

Ok, as THIS book will be highly significant to many Valiant Fans, it is important that we do not lose track of the issues and variants that exist.

I have attempted to list everything that I am presently aware of below; however, IF I have missed anything, or if something new is released, pls post below and I will update this checklist.

1. The Life & Death of Toyo Harada #1 (Suayan Diamond Breakfast Ashcan)

2. The Life & Death of Toyo Harada #1 (Suayan Cvr A)
NOTE #1: Cvr A was listed at No. #25 on Comichron’s list of Advance reorders placed between Feb. 18-24, 2019
3. The Life & Death of Toyo Harada #1 (Harvey Cvr B)

5. The Life & Death of Toyo Harada #1 (Mack Cvr C)

6. The Life & Death of Toyo Harada #1 (Braithwaite 1:250 Glass Mirror Variant)

7. The Life & Death of Toyo Harada #1 (Blank)

8. The Life & Death of Toyo Harada #1 (CAFU Pre-Order Variant)
NOTE #1: Available only as a pre-order set (Pre-Order Edition Bundle).
The only way to obtain these issues was to pre-order all six issues by the final order cut-off date of February 18th, 2019. No additional copies were be made available beyond that date. Subsequent issues were not offered in later solicitations.
9. The Life & Death of Toyo Harada #1 (Salgado Shazam Comics & Toys Virgin)
100 copies
NOTE #1: Joe Gri (who produced this variant for C2E2) confirmed that of the 100 printed copies, 30% were damaged to some degree. This means (obviously) that 70 total undamaged copes were sold and/or available. The remaining 30 copies are presently on a shelf in Joe’s storage area, and “may” eventually be signed and/or pressed at some later unknown date. However, as with all damaged comics, there is ZERO no one can predict how the 30% will grade.
10. The Life & Death of Toyo Harada #1 (Salgado Shazam Comics & Toys)
400 copies
NOTE #1: Joe Gri (who produced this variant for C2E2) stated that of the 400 printed copies, possibly 30% were damaged to some degree (however, Joe later confirmed that he could not state exactly how many as there are a few unopened packages remaining.). This means that (possibly) 280 total undamaged copes were sold, made available, and/or remain in an unopened package. The remaining estimated 120 (presumably) damaged copies are presently on a shelf in Joe’s storage area, and “may” eventually be signed and/or pressed at some later unknown date. However, as with all damaged comics, there is ZERO no one can predict how they will grade.
11. The Life & Death of Toyo Harada #1 (Adams South Carolina ComicCon Sketch)
500 copies

12. The Life & Death of Toyo Harada #1 (Choi Paradise / Wondercon)
650 copies
NOTE #1: Ed Greenberg confirmed that approx. 100 copies of the total 650 printed copies were signed by writer Joshua Dysart (with a certificate of authenticity). This indicates that (at most) 550 unsigned copies exist in circulation.
13. The Life & Death of Toyo Harada #1 (Adams South Carolina ComicCon)
750 copies

14. The Life & Death of Toyo Harada #1 (Baron Brave New World)
350 copies

15. The Life & Death of Toyo Harada #1 (Veregge Emerald City Comic Con Exclusive)

16. The Life & Death of Toyo Harada #1 (Suayan Gold)

17. The Life & Death of Toyo Harada #1 (Twin City Comic Con Cat Variant)
250 copies
NOTE #1: The “Cat Variant” was made available to deluxe ticket holders at the Twin City Comic Con in Winston Salem, NC (hosted by Ssalefish Comics).

NOTE #2: Following the 2019 Twin City Comic Con, 30 copies (of the 250 total print run) were made available for purchase on Monday, 08 APR 19 through a link posted on the Valiant Comic Fans group on Facebook. Bret Parks (Ssalefish Comics) confirmed that only 30 copies had been listed.

Thanks for putting this together, DBS! :thumb: I will put a pretty nice dent in this list, but won’t come close to getting all the store variants. :(

We should do a page of all the store and con exclusives. There is no definitive source!

I like this idea! I'd be happy to help with the effort. I have all (or most) store and con exclusives. I can send my inventory notes to help contribute/reconcile a master list.

I sure do miss Martin's Valiant Database. :(

Pls post it below if you find anything that is not listed above. Trying to get this list to 100% for everyone.

Also need to stay on the lookout for Store Exclusives for later issues (as sometimes occurs).

Thanks for the list! Is there a difference between #s 10 and 11, or are they just duplicates?

I freaked out for a second when I saw something limited to 100 that I needed. Thankfully I found out I already ordered that one before I bought a second set.

Good catch, that was a duplicate and I have corrected the OP. :thumb:

I got mine through Joe Gri on the VCF Facebook page (https://m.facebook.com/groups/438684846 ... 1623267545" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). When I was freaking out I found this https://www.comicburst.com/life-death-t ... t-set.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; but I've never used them, whereas I have worked with Joe before.

I noticed there looks to be 2 versions of The Life & Death of Toyo Harada #1 (Mack Cvr C).

One as the lefthand title bar in green and the other has it in red. Does anyone know what the difference is with these versions?

Mine is red. I assumed that the green was just what it looked like in promotional images? Looking at CLZ, they all show green trade dress, but I have blue, green, and red depending on the cover.

On a side note, the list needs the gold added. I haven't wanted a gold more than I've wanted that one!

On EBay I find a green and a red version of the LADOTH Mack Cvr C. I haven’t seen any blues for this Cvr C. So I assume the Cvr C has 2 versions then and both are designated Cvr C?

I am physically holding a Mack variant in my hand right now, and it has a red logo box.

To be sure, I just ordered copies from eBay listed with a green logo box. Will soon see.

Will be interesting to see but I suspect as it was mentioned above that Red is the actual book and green was just the promotional image (which is what some eBay sellers seem to be using).

Sorry, to clarify, the blue one I mentioned was cover B. The images I can find online are often green for B and C, but the actual issues I've seen are other colors (same goes for the glass).

I think your point on promotional cover art may be correct. All the EBay listings with green aren’t actual comics and look like promo images. If folks have physical red versions for CVR C, that is most likely the version. I think it looks better in red as well! Love Mack artwork.

Green was a stock image, red is the actual book. Same thing happened to my Choi cover, early images I showed were green, then when I saw final proof, is where I saw purple for the first time.

Looks like there have been a few sales of the Gold;

1. $40
2. $50
3. $100
4. $100

The Ashcans are averaging $10-15 (similar to the Convention Exclusives).

Sales and/or listings for the CAFU Pre-Order Edition have been somewhat bi-polar, in that some have sold for $4, others $10, and there is still a $48 (which has been marked down from it’s original price).

The 1:250 (Glass Variant) have sold in the $145 to $250 range with most above $200 (yes, I own one too).

Of course that is as of today.

The funny thing is the gold issue is going for a high price..... but probably has a higher print run of 1000 (as possibly compared to the glass and store Variants)

Are gold books that much more desirable?

I paid $100 for one of the Gold books, but I could have got it for a lower price. The listing had a Best Offer feature, but I asked the Seller if I paid full price, would he be able to ship it to me by Friday. He was only offering Media Mail shipping. I did see another Seller listed his book for the same price and it sold this evening as well.
