I like most of the character designs, but god I hate Rai with hair. It reminds me of the terrible future force series.jaden_sai wrote:EXCLUSIVE: Valiant Unveils Breakthrough's Future World Character Designs

Pretty clear that’s the inspiration. But the VEI Rai was never really Tohru anyway, just visually. I’ll assume the same here. Pretty cool designs all around.FormerReader wrote:I like most of the character designs, but god I hate Rai with hair. They look pretty derivative to me, and the elephant guy makes me groan. That being said, it's all in the execution. Hope it works out well. I like that they are taking chances.
Re: Valiant Unveils Breakthrough's Future World Character De
Some of the designs look really cool (I like the Bloodshot kinda, minus the knee pads) but overall it looks too much like high fantasy, I'd personally be more interested in a harder more realistic sci-fi take
Re: Valiant Unveils Breakthrough's Future World Character De
I think the designs are a mistake. They are taking Indian mythology and making part of their Japanese origin book. Rai's style is from ramayana, the elephant character looks like Ganesh, the guy with the big swords armor is Indian. Also agree that it looks like fantasy which is not a good fit for a sci-fi series.

I'm wary, but I think this could actually turn out to be pretty cool and/or unique.

Well we don’t have all the details on the plot yet. Maybe Rai is going on a world tour?syzhang28 wrote:I think the designs are a mistake. I'm not sure about this either, but Japan in orbit had sectors for all the world cultures (and ages) while Japan pieces crashed to Earth could land anywhere, and genetic manipulation in 4000AD could build "Ganesh guys" without it being as nuts as 2000AD.

Have to admit, I'm not digging the 'animal people' at all, but Rai with long hair and the Rayden hat is very cool (not so hot on the Liefeld pouches though...)

Elephant guy is not cool. The rest look fine. Dont like minis so will probably pass on this. I like Ka'Orta (elephant guy). These are no more silly than some characters we've seen in Timewalker or X-O. It's comics.

Who is the mystery guy all the way to the left in the final line up of all the characters? That is the one that looks most interesting to me.

Rai pretty much operates on Clarke's Third Law. The science in 4000 A.D. is so advanced its indistinguishable from magic. For all we know some of these characters could just be androids dressed up as mythical creatures. Like previous posters mentioned, the animal people are probably just a result of extremely advanced genetic engineering. Lab grown monsters maybe? The South Asian influenced Elephant character makes me wonder if Rai is going on a world tour. Maybe exposing New Japan to cultures outside of their own that aren't experienced through a simulation.

I wonder if there's been some kind of transmigration across the Earth/Lost Land border between now and 4001?SuperMage wrote:Rai pretty much operates on Clarke's Third Law. People keep mentioning this idea of a 'world tour'. Just take a look at real human history to notice the degree and timeframes in which people and cultures migrate: it's entirely possible that any and all cultures as we currently know them have already been superseded by something new. This 'South Asian' look could be stemming straight from the centre of modern-day America for all we know (which is probably called something else by 4001 anyway...), and this entire arc takes place in a single 10-mile square geographical locationSuperMage wrote:The South Asian influenced Elephant character makes me wonder if Rai is going on a world tour. This does not look very cyberpunk to me. It looks full on fantasy. The series will explore the distant future of the Valiant U, a "cyberpunk future unlike any they’ve ever seen before."
Glad to see 4002 Bloodshot. I hope they explain who that guy was in SALVATION and what all that was about. But I won't hold my breath.
Not really feeling the furries.

This, plus at that point, culture has merged. We've already seen it. There is largely one culture.Shadowman99 wrote:I wonder if there's been some kind of transmigration across the Earth/Lost Land border between now and 4001?SuperMage wrote:Rai pretty much operates on Clarke's Third Law. Anyway, it all looks like derivative muck. Or Elephantmen. Or Ganesh 4001. Like I said. But, maybe they will knock it out of the park. Who knew that Guardians of the Galaxy could be good?

Dinosaurs and animal people?
I love Rai. One of my favorites. I'm not so sure about this one though. That being said, dinosaurs worked in Archer & Armstrong (2012).

Love the cover.
Still not sold on "animal/human hybrids". I know it's 4001, but in terms of hard science that's just too far toward the 'Just Not Possible' scale at this point in time for me to accept the possibility of it occuring in the future Yeah, I know that everything in all the comic books in every line is all make-believe, but this one idea I'm just not buying. I'll buy the comic though, as I'm sure that it'll be fine in terms of overall entertainmos.

I'm not one to get excited about dinosaurs in anything, but to be fair - there is a precedent for them since they had some on New Japan before it crashed. It makes sense that someone will run into those dinosaurs on the loose...nycjadie wrote:Dinosaurs and animal people?
