Calling for submissions for a Doctor Solar project
I plan on publishing a comic-sized catalog that prints the original items I have that were created for two unpublished Doctor Solar comics, along with additional material. I am looking for material/submissions for the catalog. The project will be a very limited printing (probably numbered), and copies will be made available for purchase. Any profits made from the sale of the catalog after costs will be given to charity (Northwest Harvest and Mary's Place are two that I routinely donate to). Submissions will be unpaid, but there might be fun incentives for those that contribute (like an even more limited printing). Details are all TBD.
The chief content will include unique items that I have in my collection, including a blue-line copy of the unpublished Doctor Solar Man of the Atom 32 (Roger McKenzie/Dan Spiegle), as well as the original art for an 8-page story for Doctor Solar Man of the Atom 34 (Roger McKenzie/Dick Ayers).
Submissions can include essays on Doctor Solar, Gold Key/Whitman, the artists, or other things related to the era in comics (e.g. publishing practices - blue-line, distribution changes, etc.). I'm also open to artwork (by fans or professional artists). I have a cover that Joe commissioned years ago that could be used with the project as well. Original sketches by Ayers would be great to include. I believe I may have one floating around. I believe that Roger McKenzie is the only talent still living that was involved in these works.
The Valiant Solar #1 issue holds a special place in my heart as a comics fan. Many people have reached out to me to share some of these materials, but I've been waiting to do it in a special way.
Nothing in the catalog will infringe intellectual property rights. If anyone has any concerns as to infringement of intellectual property rights, or any other legal concerns, please feel free to PM me. I'm happy to address questions as to the production of the catalog offline. I'm a licensed intellectual property attorney (NY, WA) with over 21 years in the field, and do not have concerns with the publication of these unique items in catalog form.

For Dr. Solar in general, is Frank Bolle still available at age 94?nycjadie wrote:I believe that Roger McKenzie is the only talent still living that was involved in these works.

Frank Bolle would be cool. Maybe we could get some great artist to do a page. ECCC is coming up, and I could get some Valiant talent to do a sketch, perhaps?

This sounds so awesome. I don’t think I have anything unique or cool to contribute to it but I would definitely like a copy of it.

It's Yvel (with a werewolf), but I don't think I've ever posted it. I'm sure it's out there somewhere though!jmatt wrote:Is that the Yvel cover from a recent thread?nycjadie wrote:I have a cover that Joe commissioned years ago that could be used with the project as well.

Re: Calling for submissions for a Doctor Solar project
I'm interested in getting a copy too. Contacting Frank Bolle would be a great idea. I know Dan Spiegle (RIP) was still doing work a few years ago when he was way up there. Would be interesting to get a Paul Creddick piece.

Re: Calling for submissions for a Doctor Solar project
I think having a Paul Creddick piece would be an awesome Easter egg. I have some Valiant Solar 5 sketched outlines by Paul Creddick!
Any recommendations?
Who has Petrilak’s email address? I thought he did a Frank Boole interview at one point that could be reproduced.

Re: Calling for submissions for a Doctor Solar project
would love to see that too. What about Peter Grau? Anybody contacted him before? I assume it's well established that BWS hates everyone, right?nycjadie wrote:I think having a Paul Creddick piece would be an awesome Easter egg. I have some Valiant Solar 5 sketched outlines by Paul Creddick!

Re: Calling for submissions for a Doctor Solar project
Thanks all. Just replied to all PMs. Here is my current thinking:
2 books
(1) Essay, Interview, Solar 34 (8-page), original sketches
(2) Solar 32
I'm looking for submissions for:
(1) essay
(2) interview
(3) original sketches of Solar that people own (must be owned, and have hi-res copies)
(4) anything else fun?

Re: Calling for submissions for a Doctor Solar project
Are you looking for original sketches of the original Doctor Solar only? I have 2 Bob Layton sketches of the Valiant version of Dr Solar and Phil (see below, can't find pic of Phil sketch). Not sure if you are looking for those to be included?

Re: Calling for submissions for a Doctor Solar project
I must get a copy of this. Doctor Solar is my favorite comic book character. My favorite comic book is the first Gold Key issue.
I carry around the first Doctor Solar archives from Dark Horse in my car. Please get in touch with me when this is ready. Thanks, man!
