Re: What slabs do you collect?
I collect anything Valiant or related to Valiant. That's my huge focus. Defiant, Gold Key, Acclaim, Broadway, etc. 9.8 is the goal, but I do have 9.6 for some lines where it is incredibly difficult to get 9.8. 30+ boxes and counting.
I also collect Dark Knight Returns and related titles. I'm missing one Infinity Gauntlet in 9.8. Maximum Carnage. Weapon X (from MCP). Lots of random keys that are favorites. I collect Kirby 4th World in random fits and starts when I find them in high grade. I have a few golden age Plastic Man to fit with my run of GA Plastic Man/Police comics I will someday complete.
Titles I'm thinking about for the future:
Hellboy and BPRD (I have a lot of 9.8 candidates)
Uncanny X-Men (I find screening the newsprint books really hard)

Re: What slabs do you collect?
Sweet Christmas! Impressive.
My CGC collection is relatively new.
Thus far I'm collecting key Valiant characters (Gold Key to VEI), trying for entire run of Invincible, and then the occasional random thing (Star Wars 1, old Action Comics, etc.)
Other than Four Color 596, I consider my Valiant CGC collection complete (for now).
I'm over half of the way on Invincible with 9.8's. Don't know what I'll do when I get finished. Sell them?
I'd like like to have complete Sandman (doable) and Cerebus (not doable), but haven't even started on those.

Awesome, gentlemen! I've just begun a MARVEL NEW UNIVERSE CGC collection. My goal is to eventually get every book in 9.8, but I did just buy a copy of THE WAR #1 in CGC 9.4.

Re: What slabs do you collect?
I’m working on a slab for every X-O cover / variant.
I’m focusing on getting the highest grade possible. Also, trying to have them signed when possible.
I have other Valiant and Batman slabs, but the time, money, and space limit me to only X-O at this time. If I expanded my goal to other Valiant titles I would need a bigger house, lol. God bless my wife.

Re: What slabs do you collect?
I've been collecting slabs since about 2001, but a few of my "decade genre" combinations didn't even start until the past couple of years.
I generally like to have a "representative slab" for all kinds of categories. Outside my "Top 25" listed above, there are things like "1960s DC Jim Shooter" and "pre-Walking Dead Zombies".
Valiant was the first purchase... a CGC 9.4 Solar #10 first printing. I think I paid $40.

Re: What slabs do you collect?
Love these stories. Slabs are definitely one of my chief focuses on the collecting side of my interest in comics. Minimum grades are an interesting topics. Here are some of mine:
Valiant Related
Gold Key 1st Appearances - 7.5 or higher
Gold Key commons - 8.5 or higher
V1 - 9.8 except in very rare circumstances
Acclaim - 9.6
VEI - 9.6 (9.8s are ridiculously hard to get outside of the prestige format)
Defiant, Other - 9.8
Other
1990s to present - Generally 9.8 only.
1980s - Sometimes a 9.6
1970s - Keys aside, 9.4
1960s - Keys aside, often 8.5 or higher

Do you ever get books settling sideways in the inner well? I had a few shipped to me from CGC recently that settled. Weird.

Re: What slabs do you collect?
I haven't noticed any settling sideways. My slabs are all shelved spine down so that the interior pages rest inside the cover and there is no pull on the staples.
I used to store my slabs flat, but lower slabs had too much weight above them and sometimes cracked. No weight on any slabs when stored spine down.
I'll see if I can add some example scans to my list tomorrow.

Re: What slabs do you collect?
Greg- That is something else buddy! Very cool. I have around 100 slabs and my top priorities are as follows.
1. 90's VALIANT (Key issues in 9.6/9.8)
-I am only missing 1 book that I consider key. CEAR in 9.6/9.8.
2. Major Marvel keys in 9.0 or higher (This is a long process since these books are generally $$$)
-Next up is GSX1, Hulk 181, Avengers 4.
3. VEI rare variants/VEI examples of amazing cover art
-Only missing 1 book that I really want. Eternal Warrior 1 1:50 in 9.6/9.8
4. Adam Hughes/J Scott Campbell covers (Usually the girl covers. They both do these well)
-Next up is Amazing spider-man presents black cat 1 in 9.6/9.8. Black cat is my favorite.
-Supergirl and the legion of superheroes 23 and superior Spider-Man 20 are probably my 2 favorite covers by these guys. Mesmerizing to look at and display wonderfully in my house.
I too have a great wife that "allows" me to go nuts and display a lot of these books. (The side show statues are another story....)
My 5 favorite slabs in particular order
1. Rai 0 Glossy (CGC 9.8)
2. Amazing Spider-Man 129 (CGC 9.0)-recently sent to CGC for crack,press,regrade.
3. Amazing Spider-Man 300 (CGC 9.6)
4. Captain America 100 (CGC 9.2)
5. Eternal Warrior 5 Mack Variant (CGC 9.6)- Just stunning to look at

Re: What slabs do you collect?
I collect the following:
V1 and Acclaim 9.6/9.8
Transformers (Marvel 1984) 9.6/9.8
Marvel and DC keys (1960's 7.5, 1970's 9.0, 1980's 9.6, recents 9.8)
I know it's a small list, but I like to keep things focused. I love all things V1, and the major publishers' keys are excellent investments. Transformers is a labor of love since I read many issues traveling between my mom and dad's homes in the 80's. Gotta love divorce!
My best book is ASM #129 in 9.4.

They are mostly easy to find in 9.6 or higher except for the later issues (approximately #65 - #80). I have a bunch coming back from CGC and can get some pics. I sent in an entire run of the Marvel G2 series and got all 9.8's except for two issues.IMJ wrote:I considered this for a while myself, but I didn't dive in. Re: What slabs do you collect?
I used to have a near complete V1 and VEI Gold CGC 9.8 collection, but I recently sold off most of those slabs. I still have over 100 V1, Acclaim, and VEI slabs including the following books:
Master Set of Incentive Variants in CGC 9.8 for Divinity
Master Set of Incentive Variants in CGC 9.8 for Savage
Several Faith Variants in CGC 9.8
Several Harbinger Variants in CGC 9.8
Working on Imperium Variants in CGC 9.8
Summer of Valiant TPB's that are graded
Several Quantum and Woody #1 in varous grades (Regular and Painted)
Three copies of Solar Man of the Atom #3 CGC 9.8
Two copies of Eternal Warrior #4 CGC 9.8
Several copies of Acclaim Bloodshot #3 in various grades
I also collect the following Non-Valiant books:
Manifest Destiny
Lazarus #1 (I have all five #1 Variants in CGC 9.8)
Green Arrow
Catwoman
I know I am missing several books, but this is what comes to mind.

You all are impressive. Just started getting the CGC bug. Over halfway there on Valiant.
V1 1st appearances of major characters
V1 Chromium Golds
VEI 1st appearances of major characters in Golds and Variants
VEI Metal Variants
Unity Red; CEAR
Savage 1:40 Variants
Divinity 1 Series Variants
Harbinger War Series 1:40 Variants
Thinking about moving to CBCS for Marvel 80/90s keys after I close out the above (if I ever do).

I've been working on Bronze Age appearance list of Jonah Hex in 9.4 or better and I am having a hell of a time finding some of the Weird Western Tales appearances, mainly, 32, 33, 37, 38. I offered nearly 4 times GPA for most on the CGC boards without any responses.

I've only got a few here because there isn't much available on the market and although I've got a nice full run with all Direct & Newsstand variants, those are unslabbed and there aren't many 9.8 candidates in it. I'd only generally want these slabbed in that grade, although the Cap book is wayyyy overpriced in 9.8, and the McFarlane signature slab was something I couldn't pass up.

But I do actively buy Deadpool series books in 9.8, Valiant/VEI any and all, GI Joe in 9.8, Dark Horse Star Wars titles, and top census war books from golden age and up. LOTS of money tide up in war, a segment of the comic collecting world that is becoming forgotten about.
