Been looming around these parts for months now, I probably won't ever have as much to say as I say now, but I wanted to thank all of you. Your posts have fueled my Valiant obsession as I awaited shipments of new comics. I've even bought from a few of you via eBay--before making the connections between the posters and the sellers (Y'all did great).

I actually always had a mostly (but more subconscious than outright) negative outlook on Valiant. I was an Image/Vertigo kid in the 90s. And I loved the video games Turok/Shadowman, but when I picked up the Acclaim comics I was discouraged, chocked 'em up to a cash in.

Around 2006, financial difficulty led me to ban myself from the purchasing of comics. I relied on my then girlfriend (now wife) to supply me with graphic novels for my birthday or x-mas. She did a great job. I did really well restraining myself until I decided to re-read the Alan Moore run of Swamp Thing last October. I forgot how amazing that comic was and ended up reading the entire Swamp Thing series (including getting past admiring Eric Powell's cover art to deal with Dysart's....um...run). That has fueled a full, unabated return to comics. And because a lot of the comics I passionately followed were wrapped up. I needed 'new.'

I saw plenty of VEI's stuff, but was doing a really good job ignoring it. There seems to be a lot of fake hype in the comic world.

Maybe it was Amazon Recommendations, but I stumbled onto Dr. Mirage. It had better reviews than the 2012 Shadowman (which I became aware of back then and almost added to my wish list a couple of times, but ignored because of my previous experience and the reviews weren't glowing). Since Mirage promised a return to Deadside, which I was fascinated with because of the game, it seemed like I might like the book.

But what actually made me buy it was this: I wanted to have more female superheroes for my daughters than the ones provided by the Big Two. They can't read it yet, but I've promised them access to my library one day.

Because I liked Mirage (deluxe hardcover), I bought the original series and found it enjoyable in an offbeat and unexpected way. I went ahead and dove into 2012 Shadowman--and I really, really liked it as well. It left me wanting, ultimately, but right around the corner was Free Comic Book Day and Kindt's XO Manowar became the affirming factor.

It's hard to remember my exact path from then on, but I've read everything to date that VEI has put out (as well as their hardcover editions of the pre-VEI stuff) and am obsessing over what comes next.

I'm still reading other books, but it's usually because I'm in between a Valiant release.
