It has been a little while since one was for sale... and the CBCS aspect is a new variable.

Re: CBCS 9.8 Bloodshot 0 Platinum on ebay
CGC and CBCS were both started by the same guy, Steve Borock.
CBCS is the newer company, so it is facing general skepticism.
My only problem with grading companies is with PGX. It's just a guy who thought a knock-off slabbing company could skim some profits off ignorant customers. He also let his friends slab their own books. Because PGX (which was called CGG originally, then PGA, then PGX) is a scam, I think collectors are skeptical of anything that isn't CGC.
CBCS only has a real chance because it's the founder of CGC.
As far as grades go, CGC and CBCS are the same to me...so I enjoy (currently) paying a little less for CBCS 9.8, since it usually has fewer bidders.

Re: CBCS 9.8 Bloodshot 0 Platinum on ebay
i'd echo this -- CBCS also has a reputation of being stricter on grading than CGC -- and its competition has forced CGC to up its game (and shorten its turnaround time) significantly.
I can't personally speak to the grade differentials yet but I'll be able to do so in a month or so -- I'm sending a few high grade CBCS books to CGC this weekend (Silver Age Magnus). I wouldn't bother re-slabbing them except that they're for my top CGC Magnus registry set -- hence the vendor lock-in. When graded, these will be some new best existing CGC copies, even if CBCS turns out to be off a bit.
In short, I'd believe the CBCS grade.

Re: CBCS 9.8 Bloodshot 0 Platinum on ebay
My personal experience has been mixed with both. I find CGC much more consistent on grading. I have CBCS with color breaking spine splits. I've also seen the horror stories of misgraded books by CGC online. Both companies make mistakes, but I've personally found the 9.8s I get from CBCS might not be 9.8s at CGC. However, others have had opposite experiences.
I find CGC just simply impossible with labeling in the last year. I have not received a shipment in the last year that didn't have a mislabeled book. In this last shipment, they swapped a EW 1 Gold book label with a EW 2 variant label. I also received a Savage 1 1:10 that was labeled "Retailer Incentive." I realize there are a lot of different covers to track, but they are supposed to be the experts, and if I can figure it out on eBay....

Would love to see the results. Are you cracking them before sending to CGC?Rai-fan wrote:i'd echo this -- CBCS also has a reputation of being stricter on grading than CGC -- and its competition has forced CGC to up its game (and shorten its turnaround time) significantly.

Re: CBCS 9.8 Bloodshot 0 Platinum on ebay
I just wish CBCS could find a label that was appealing. I don't mind their first generation ones, but I feel like they've gotten worse and worse every time they try to modify their design.
Re: CBCS 9.8 Bloodshot 0 Platinum on ebay
I'm actually not cracking them -- think that they'll be better protected in transit and I don't believe CGC will "punish" the books for having gone to a rival company first.nycjadie wrote:Would love to see the results. Books include:
Magnus # 34, CBCS 9.6
Magnus # 46, CBCS 9.4
Doctor Solar # 5, CBCS 8.5
Notable: the highest graded copy of Magnus # 46 is actually my CGC 9.0. The lone 9.4 on the census is fake. It was a labeling mistake from CGC that they never corrected -- turns out they swapped labels and that "9.4" belonged to # 43; the # 46 actually turned out to be an 8.5.

CGC's policy has been that they will not remove books from competitors slabs before grading. Did they change that?

Maybe they just write their grade overtop of the case in marker and still charge the same grading fee. [FACE WITH STUCK-OUT TONGUE AND WINKING EYE]ckb wrote:CGC's policy has been that they will not remove books from competitors slabs before grading. Did they change that?

Re: CBCS 9.8 Bloodshot 0 Platinum on ebay
Ugh - I didn't know that. Will call them tomorrow to confirm.
Frankly, I'd rather have them open the cases than me.

Seems like they will crack competitor slabs if you agree that they are not liable for damage during deslabbing.

And now a Divinity #1 variant in CBCS 9.9 on eBay. Looks like CBCS trying to make its presence felt with Valiant fans !!!

Hmmm, what if there's a tiny spine tick or blunted corner that happens there and the grade suffers? You would have zero recourse....greg wrote:Seems like they will crack competitor slabs if you agree that they are not liable for damage during deslabbing.

Maybe it's just the CBCS books that I own, but I view that all the books were overgraded by a 0.2 of a grade. In addition, the entire label presentation makes the book look very cheap and does not present well, IMHO.
Re: CBCS 9.8 Bloodshot 0 Platinum on ebay
Just called them. They will gladly accept and grade books in competitors' slabs.ckb wrote:CGC's policy has been that they will not remove books from competitors slabs before grading. Did they change that?
And I'm not sure why trusting them to properly remove a book from a slab without damage (which I, btw, have never done and they likely have done lots) is any different from trusting them to properly remove a book from a mylar.

It's the liability piece Greg mentioned, if they damaged a tiny corner taking a bag out of Mylar you have a case, here you have no recourse.

Re: CBCS 9.8 Bloodshot 0 Platinum on ebay
I'm actually surprised they will even do it. I assume they were responding to CBCS offering to do the same. I know at one point they would not do it, period. Guess it was mainly PGX at that point.
Re: CBCS 9.8 Bloodshot 0 Platinum on ebay
That's one of the reasons I _love_ CBCS -- they've forced CGC (previously, a monopoly) to up their game -- hire more graders, decrease turnaround times, roll-back "Modern" pricing a few years, etc.
Competition (legit competition, that is - not PGX-style) is good for consumers.
