For me it was the usual chromium die cut cover crap.
I wasted so much $money$ on those fire starters when I was a kid!!
One weird one I never fell for(because it was way before I started collecting) was from the mid 80's with the Marvel hero face covers on all issues being published for that particular month. I own a few which I picked up in the old bargain bin and take them outta storage for a brief chuckle from time to time.

The number 1 issues from Image. I would buy 5 or so of each one thinking they were going to be worth hundreds someday.

Let's see:
Superman #75. Yep - bought newsstand and polybagged copies. I lucked out in that I had Superman on my pull list and had them both waiting for me when I went in after they shipped.
Team Titans #1 - I didn't feel as bad about this one. Sure, the main story was all the same, but each one of the five variants also had a separate 16-page origin story.
X-Men #1 - Let's face it. Who didn't fall for this one?

X-Men 1- the gatefold is one of comics great covers, but I have a lot somewhere also.

Yeah, I did... but as a speculator, and I worked in a newsstand at the time as well as my LCS on the weekends, so I was buying (a few) for cover less 30% and then selling them for first $30, then $40, then finally $50 before the demand died a week later.davidb wrote:Let's see:

Again, yes - but I have a full run of X-Men as I have bought every issue since, as well as having a complete run of Uncanny from #94 to current.
If you didn't know before, I am somewhat of an X-Nut...

As for anything else, I pretty much stayed away - I even only have one copy of X-Force #1...

Some people spend their whole lives believing in fairy tales, usually because they don't want to give up the fabulous prizes.

One day, the lcs owner (who was a total jerk) pulled my 14 year old self aside and asked me if I wanted the opportunity to buy the next Platinum edition comic book. My eyes lit up, thinking I was going to get some special Valiant dealer incentive. Instead, for $35 he sold me Aliens Platinum Edition. To this day, I have no idea what this comic is worth nor how rare it is, but I'm sure I got taken.

I'd actually forgotten X-Cutioner's Song. Same here - 1 to open and 1 to keep sealed. And the result for me was about the same - I hung on for a few months, until about 304, when every X-Men book shipping that month was about $3.50 cover (anniversary month, IIRC).Rai-fan wrote:buying doubles of polybagged books.
ie, 8 copies of X-force 1 (1 set + 3 cable cards)
and 2 copies each of that infernal X-men Crossover "X-Cutioner's Song." That storyline basically led me to quit collecting both X-Men & Uncanny.

Print runs for Image were hundreds of thousands of copies.inmyblood wrote:Why are Image back issues not worth a darn cent?????Dr. Phil Seleski wrote:The number 1 issues from Image. I would buy 5 or so of each one thinking they were going to be worth hundreds someday.
I always wondered that one.
(Spawn #1 was probably closer to 1,000,000.)
So, Image "first issues" are about the same as Bloodshot #1, Rai #9, etc.
It will take a long time for the demand (if any) to outweigh that kind of supply.
I "fell for" the bagged Spider-man #1.
Actually, I even fell for the Star Trek: The Next Generation Annual #1,
thinking I was getting a "first issue". (I hadn't heard of comic "annuals" before.)
Sadly, I was once offered $8 for Shadowhawk #1 (Image),
and passed since I knew the guy was going to sell it for $12-$15.

I bought the X-Cutioner's Song set, as well but it wasn't for an investment in those particular books. If I recall correctly, didn't you have to buy a complete run of these books to get the "limited" Magneto #0 sendaway book? If I remember correctly, it wasn't a case of having to remove coupons, I think they had some kind of card your dealer would sign each time you bought a part of the set and once it was complete, you sent in for your Magneto #0. Anyway, it appears that there are a ton of the regular Magneto #0's out there as I often find them in cheap boxes.davidb wrote:I'd actually forgotten X-Cutioner's Song.
