Re: AF 15 9.4 being auctioned
I read an article on this one on CTV news yesterday that had this one selling for 450K+, but they ended the article noting that a similar copy sold in 2011 for 1.1mil.

Not sure if I'm reading this correctly but does anyone know if the prior copy was at a higher grade? Or is it in fact a case of the comic going down in value that much?

I think that caliber book in that grade goes for what the highest 2 bidders are willing to pay at the time, more than whether the "value" has gone up or down. I haven't checked the census, but if you're a billionaire, and really want it, you may or may not hunt for the best deal on one. May just say screw it, I want it, $1 million, $450k, what's the difference, I want that book. I prefer to feel like I got a decent deal with most buys/sells. But in some grail cases, prices can be all over the place. Look at the Bloodshot Platinum that sold for $5k+ or the NM 98 for $15k. Anyone catch what the 9.9 Hulk 181 went for?

That's just depressing. I certainly hope that the price people pay should be a determination of market value. Market value is the price that people arrive at in open market transactions between arms length parties. Even if it's something that someone just "wants" then I would argue that they have just set the value. Unfortunately if someone is only willing to pay 450k for something that under the same conditions in 2011 sold for 1.1mil then I would argue that this represents a change in market sentiment and a drop in value (recognizing that the potential buyer pool is finite and small).

$150,000 in 2011. Comic Link adverties the sale on their website. Not a bad price considering what it would sale for now or 5 or 10 years from now.eschnit wrote:I think that caliber book in that grade goes for what the highest 2 bidders are willing to pay at the time, more than whether the "value" has gone up or down. The 2011 9.4 sale was $325k.macfarlane wrote:I read an article on this one on CTV news yesterday that had this one selling for 450K+, but they ended the article noting that a similar copy sold in 2011 for 1.1mil.

The 1.1m sale was also in 2011 but that was a 9.6.

Re: AF 15 9.4 being auctioned
Wow, good info on the book Dino.
.2 of grade higher, 3 x the price.
I honestly wonder who buys these big dollar books.
As in books over 50,000.
Obvious answer is 'the 1%' , the rich.
But whether or not they are collectors or alternate market investors.
Their is no way I would pay £50,000 for a comic, let alone £750,000 .
I wonder how much money is hidden in books like this.

I wish their was a Spinal Tap comic, and I had a copy CGC graded at 11.

More like the .1% rich. Depending on who you ask, admission to the 1% is $350K or so in income per year, before taxes.

Re: AF 15 9.4 being auctioned
350k a year.
Thats about £250k
Pending what you did with the money, how you spent it I could see that as the 1% If you where wise with the money.
Wisdom and money do not often go together.
Still don't think collectors buying this.
