Valiant Top 10 (1990-2011)

Post by DirtbagSailor »

I'm working an article breaking down the Top 10 (or so) highest value books from this time period.

1. Bloodshot #0 Platinum Error & Pink Error
2. Secrets of the Valiant Universe #1 Wizard Special Edition
3. Solar Man of the Atom #10 (1st Print)
4. Harbinger #1 (W/Coupon)
5. Eternal Warrior #1 (Gold Flat)
6. Archer & Armstrong #0 (Gold)
7. Chaos Effect Alpha (Red)
8.
9.
10.

and I need some help filling in the gaps.

Ideas and discussion are welcome please. :)

If you approach it like... "You're looking through the 37th dollar book longbox of the day at a comic convention, when suddenly you find ___________."

Then rank what you hope for...

Bloodshot 0 Platinum is definitely #1, but Chaos Effect Alpha Red might be #2... or an Acclaim variant... or EW 27 VVSS.

From a 9.8 perspective (or highest in census, since some have no 9.8); what are your thoughts there?

Acclaim heroes stand alone
Turok eb games
Sm glow
Diamond unity tbps 1 & 2
Sm special edition full size
Armorines 4
Shadow man v3 #6

I don't know about CGC books, or 9.8s, but if I was diggin through a box, the only books that would be above these as "sweet!" Would be: blood plat, ew 27 vvss, Harby 1 w/ coup (cause of movie), and I guess the wizard book, but honestly I'd rather have any of the books on this list but that might be my ignorance. The solar 10, and a&a and ew gold books and even the cear, I've had many multiples of those books. The rare acclaim books are just hard to find in the wild.

Very tough call... probably because I've been thinking about Valiant 1991-1996 for about 20 years.

As Elveen mentioned, there are some Acclaim books that are nearly impossible to find, especially in high grade. However, that's the only thing they have going for them. They're hard to find. Otherwise... they're no big deal. If they were easier to find, they wouldn't be important. They are valuable only because supply is low.

Shadowman Vol 2 #16 Glow-in-the-Dark is really tough to find. But the regular edition is worth about $5. So, there's nothing outstanding about the Glow book... except that it's tough to find. Vol 3 #2 - Good, Bad, and Very Ugly... wouldn't be more than $10 if it was as common as the regular. The toughest two Acclaim books might be the Turok books without a UPC. But the regular versions are sitting on Ebay right now for under $5.

The highest-valued Valiant books have the same problem... Bloodshot 0 Platinum is the prime example. Bloodshot 0 regular is about $2. So, what's so special about the Platinum? It's hard to find. Bloodshot 0 Gold is harder to find than Bloodshot 0 regular, so the Gold has value. Bloodshot 0 Platinum is much harder to find than Bloodshot 0 Gold, so its value is multiples of Gold.

Chaos Effect Alpha... no one cares unless it's red. Secrets of the Valiant Universe #1 Special Wizard Edition... also nothing special without that Wizard foil on it. The VVSS books are all easy to find and of minimum importance without those signatures.

Meanwhile, you've got books like Harbinger #1, Solar #10, Solar #3, X-O Manowar #1, etc. They are much, much easier to find... but they have value beyond their supply. They have value because of what they contain. First Harbinger kids, First Eternal Warrior, First Harada, First Aric, etc.

Valiant 1991-1996 doesn't have many books that are both super important and also very low print. Harbinger #0 Pink and Magnus #0 (either style) are probably the closest to having both qualities.

Unity #0 Red has been my favorite 1991-1996 book for many years, because it has lots of awesome qualities. It's the first Unity chapter, has BWS cover art with the whole Valiant universe ON it, is the first Valiant comic with the whole Valiant universe IN it, reveals Mothergod (not just Erica Pierce, scientist), and it has a low print. Unity #0 Blue has all of the same qualities, except for the low print, but it's not an expensive book.

Similar situation for Archer & Armstrong #0 Gold, because it's the first appearance of Archer and Armstrong, it's pre-Unity, and it has a low print. The regular A&A #0 is the first appearance of Archer & Armstrong and it's pre-Unity... so the Gold is a deluxe of something already great.

Unity #0 Red and Archer & Armstrong #0 Gold definitely benefit from being low print, but they are also very important books.

I realize a Top 10 list is going to focus heavily on the price, which is fine because you can put a dollar amount on them and order it.
But, in the decades of collecting comics... and other collectibles... there just seems to be a big difference to me whether something is valuable because of its high quality or its low quantity.

Both high quality and low quantity would be great for any collectible. But, if you can only choose one when you pay lots of money... books which only have low quantity just seem like posers.

The only valiant / acclaim book I've never seen in the wild is the Turok EB.

I've seen every other valiant book.

Both Turok EBs I've owned I got from buying a collection. They are the only two copies I've ever seen with my own eyes.

And I agree with what Greg said, inherently awesome and rare is the top of the pops.

I wonder if the Diamond unity tpbs are the closest book that meets both criteria.

The Turok EB story is blah.

I would have to add theses 3 books

Rai 0 CGC 10
Shadowman 1 CGC 9.9
Magnus 0 CGC 9.9

All have importance and one of a kind... at least so far....

As individual issues, yes, those certainly make a list of most valuable single issues.

But how do each of those stack against others if they are raw? Or if they are 9.8?

I might say that Unity #0 Red, and X-O #4 stand pretty strong (though Magnus #0 is likely a solid contender as well).

If we're talking about high valued raw books then EW 27 V.V.S.S has to be included. Even Timewalker 1 V.V.S.S., Geomancer 1 V.V.S.S., and PSI-Lords V.V.S.S. are all valued more than Harbinger 1, Solar 10, etc..

What about Harbinger 0 Pink?

Depending on who your target audience is, you may want to exclude VVSS issues. It's a very niche market. But I guess so is the Plat, so...

I would also add XO 68 due to its longevity and importance in the grand scheme of Valiant as it is literally the end of an era. Solar 60 and Magnus 64 are also very important. More than actually story but what they represent.
