They were hand colored with Dr. Martin water color dyes. They would make a reduced copy of the B&W line art on water color paper & mount it to a card stock board. Then they would color it by hand. It would then be scanned and seperated by computer into the color plates used for printing.Jaknife wrote:this may soun dumb, but what did they use to color?

Inks are credited to Alan Weiss with pencils by Tom Ryder
(on the back side of the piece).
I think JayJay would have Shooter sign a lot of her color art.
I'm guessing because of his involvement with Magnus and
being EIC.

ahh, interesting. Now that you say it I can see a bit of Weiss in it, but I've never seen Tom Ryder pencils before. I wonder why Weiss didn't do any more work for Valiant? My guess is he was going to before Shooter was axed. Well it's a nice piecesonicdan wrote:Inks are credited to Alan Weiss with pencils by Tom Ryder

I don't think Ryder penciled much else for Valiant...lots of inking tho'!ahh, interesting. Now that you say it I can see a bit of Weiss in it, but I've never seen Tom Ryder pencils before. I'm not familiar with Weiss. What else has he done?
Oh and Ryan, how'd up like all the snow here in Nebraska?

Yeah, he's a good inker. Last I saw he was doing Way of the Rat with Jeff Johnson. Good stuff.sonicdan wrote: I don't think Ryder penciled much else for Valiant...lots of inking tho'!
He's an old timer that did a lot of work for Shooter during his Marvel era. But what I remember him for is Wardancer from Defiant, which I thought was excellent (at least artwise, I can't remember the story much anymore)sonicdan wrote: I'm not familiar with Weiss. What else has he done?
wishin it would stop soon... they say more is coming this weekend... aaargh! but at least I can stay inside and catch up on reading some comics...sonicdan wrote: Oh and Ryan, how'd up like all the snow here in Nebraska?

When I was coloring stuff I would sometimes touch up or extend the line art. Sometimes to allow me to shift the cropping on the cover but sometimes just because I was fooling around, too. I also used to make little brush strokes in the margins of the page to point my brush for doing detail work. In case you guys ever wondered why those were on a lot of my pages. In those days, I didn't really think about the pages as being something I would sell.
And I had been asked so many times by collectors who bought my work if I could get Jim to sign the pages, too, that I just have had him sign a bunch of them that I was selling.
PS. I just posted some new Magnus color pages on ebay tonight if you guys want to check them out.

I just sent my payment for 2 pages from JayJay, and along with the 4 pieces of art I bought from hillmanthe2nd yesterday will be my first pieces of Valiant art.
You rock!
By the way, I'm the one who took the Magnus #4 pg. 13 and Magnus #5 pg. 5 from JayJay.
I can't wait to get some more original art...my new hobby and way to spend lots and lots of money!
