Favorite Cover Book Specific.. This week Shadowman

Post by Maxim St. James »

Often times in these forums we discuss many things. One of the topics which comes up often are what your favorite covers? I know we all know the classic Valiant covers what about the covers that are well less know but still rock. So I thought I would start a new post each week regarding covers of just that particular book. Just to see what are the coolest but unnoticed covers out there. This week I have chosen Shadowman. Why? Well it is often times considered one of stepsister books in the Valiant universe eventhough it had one of the longest print runs of any book in the valiant/acclaim run. So it gives us several covers to choose from. So take a glimpse over that the comic libary of this site and come back tell me what you think. Keep in mind style and substance count in the art only, in this instance not on the story.

Now after all of that being said I think the best covers in the shadowman series are in this order.
Shadowman (classic vh1) number 8
Shadowman (classic vh1) number 28
Shadowman (classic vh1) number 34
Shadowman (classic vh1) number 30

Honorable Mention going to
Shadowman classic vh1 number 1
Shadowman vol 2 number 18
Shadowman classic vh1 41 & 0 ( which I downgraded becaus it's actually a double page spread.

I think these eight are the best with number 13 and 12 trailing slightly but I am anxious to hear other people opinions so what are you waiting for get to looking.
Still Looking for a Magnus cover

Well it's no secret that I love Shadowman so I'll give this a shot.

1. 21-23, yes I know it's three covers but they are all part of the same story and share a similar layout and they all kick *SQUEE*. If I have to pick one it's #22
2. #1, those early Valiant covers are as cool as the early Marvel covers.
3. #8, need I say more....vcvss....
4. #43, best ending to any Valiant book intead of scratching your head about what you just read you want more.
5. #13, great cover by Yvel.

If I keep going I'm going to list every damn one of them covers. And is it just me or is this the one book that didn't have any bad covers?

No. 1: Classic and weird and cool.
No. 6: Looks pre-Unity to me, and it has a burly woman with a cleaver! Or is that a curly woman ... er, never mind.
No. 10: My favorite Bob Hall cover.
No. 43: Key to the storyline.

Least favorite: No. 30. What the hell is that, a thermometer?

Lots of great stuff here, but my personal favorite is #28. To me, that just sums up who Jack was perfectly. Fighting evil, but a musician at heart.

Must..rid..night...of demons...

Oh sorry. My picks:

Shadowman 1 (creepy, mysterious the whole reason I tried the book to begin with)
Shadowman 4 (Miller cover, one of the definitive images of the character)
Shadowman 8 (Darque and Jack what more do you need :) )
Shadowman 10 (Another unforgetable image of Jack)
Shadowman 0 (not so much for the front cover, which is great, but for the back with another truely definitive image)

I notice covers with the original costume are getting more votes than those with the jacket and pants. Sometimes I wonder why they ever changed the costume.

Only speaking for myself here, but I thought the leather jacket and pants look was more in tune with Jack's character. I liked the costume look, but putting him in those clothes made him less of a "superhero" and more of a person.

I've got to agree with Byrneout. I always found the original Shadowman costume kind of... well, bland. A blue bodysuit with the logo on the chest. Compared to the detail on several of the other Valiant costumes, this one seemed almost boring by comparison. The jacket, pants, and T-shirt fit him much better, in my opinion. One of the biggest reasons why is that Jack Boniface (at least in the beginning) never struck me as a guy who wanted to be a hero - he just was. Someone like that I imagine would wear just whatever was convenient - kind of like Jack Knight in DC's Starman.

Shadowman #1
Shadowman #0
Shadowman #7
Shadowman #6
Shadowman #2

I'm kind of old school on the costume, I have a soft spot for the original.

I agree. It's kind of like Daredevil in the yellow costume or Iron Man in the silver suit.

It looks older and more original, even if it is cornier.

8 has to be the best, doesnt it? 1,13 and especially 25 are my favs.

cant agree with 30, simply because of that damn "taking back the night" line. I know its not part of the artwork but its so distracting in its corniness.
