Re-reading: Harbinger 36

Post by Todd Luck »

Xoken asked me to keep the re-reading project going while he's out of the country...

I thought we could do a book a day (that way people can read one every day or catch up on weekends), talk about it on its own, in the context of whats next, in regards to what expectations it creates and vote on how good it is. I don't have to be the one that posts everyday. If I miss a day or if someone wants to take over please do

For voting think of your single favourite comic book (not just VALIANT) as the benchmark - thats a 10 - and grade according to that.

The voting (I'm hoping) will help new readers make more educated descisions. If this turkey files maybe we can even do a list of the books according to average voting grade.

Make sure to mention what you like'd about the book, what you didn't, what you wish they would have done, your favourite panels, lines of dialogue, little bits of trivia etc.

Either you’re ripped off if you got the Chaos Effect epilog and then read this issue or you’ll be ripped when you get the Chaos Effect epilog after reading this issue. The fight scene and Magnus’s speech, take a huge chunk of space in both issues. And it feels like the exact same scene (but drawn better in Harbinger) no matter whose point of view it’s from.

This technique worked in Unity but that’s because the scenes that would be shown in two separate comics were a) a small part of those issues, b) there were plenty of other things going on in those issues to make them worth purchasing, c)the scene fundatmentally changed depending on the character’s point of view. Post-Shooter comics that tried this just tended to feel like I just bought the same comic twice.

There is some good in this issue. We’re finally making progress towards getting Zep on the side of the angels again. Magnus is a total bad a$$. But it just doesn’t overwhelm the rip-off factor or the overall blandness (and badness) of this storyline. It’s still a 4.

I think I read the CE epilogue already, but I didn't remember this speech.

I couldn't figure out why Magnus popped in from out of nowhere. Really, they couldv'e completely skipped that. I still gave it a 7. Maybe because it's not as bad as some of the crap that I know I still have in front of me.
