2011: Re-reading Valiant!
I kicked off my re-reading Valiant project on New Year's Day.
http://blog.newsok.com/nerdage/2011/01/ ... kicks-off/
So far, I've re-read Magnus 1-4, which held up a little better than I even expected, and I liked them the first time around. The first issue is maybe more of a slow build than I remembered, but issues 2-4 really keep it moving. I still really like this storyline, looking forward to continuing Magnus and kicking off Solar shortly. Magnus #5 is actually where I started with Valiant the first time around.
If you want to follow all the comics I read in 2011 (I'm going for 2,011 of them) you can follow with this link:
http://blog.newsok.com/nerdage/tag/2011-in-2011/
I'll post here about the Valiants (and probably in the DU section about the Ultraverse and anything else that matches that description).

My response to the first two issues of "Solar, Man of the Atom":
http://blog.newsok.com/nerdage/2011/01/ ... t-of-lost/
Basically, the "flashback" story in the middle of the comic book made me think of "Lost," where the flashback stories were intertwined with the modern part of the episode.

Thanks, Dave!
Just posted a review of the Invasion storyline in Magnus: Robot Fighter.
http://blog.newsok.com/nerdage/2011/01/ ... on-review/
In short, I still really dig Magnus... this is the stuff that got me into Valiant in the first place. I think I've decided to make the review-writing easier, I'm going to go in arcs from each series rather than strictly chronological by release date.

I have been checking it out and posting comments as time permits and Matt does a GREAT job in describing the issues and related opinions of all books read.400yrs wrote:Cool. I'll be checking out the blog. The Magnus is still good stuff over the next few issues.
Make sure to keep up the pace. Once you get behind, it could get overwhelming.
GREAT JOB, MATT !!!

Just re-read X-O Manowar 1-6, but haven't quite put together my thoughts for a blog recap yet.
Overall though, I thought it was a strong start. As has been said, it mixes some of the best elements of "Conan" and "Iron Man," but it even throws in something like an ersatz 'Captain America' element as the barbarian Aric is a man out of time.

- If you gave Aric hugs and kisses, would it be XOXO X-O?

I am thinking about rereading the valiant books as well. Is the list posted by ManofTheAtom here the best one to follow?

IMO, Mota's list is pretty psychotic. I guess it goes by date timeline.MiamiLoco wrote:I am thinking about rereading the valiant books as well. Is the list posted by ManofTheAtom here the best one to follow?

I'm reading the universe right now. I think I'm about 250 issues or so in. Greg has a list by release date (I think it may be by the solicited release date). That's what I'm using for the most part. I've used MOTA's list once or twice to move some books around.
After a few months of reading, I've kind of decided to use that list as a guide and to read by title a bit more. It keeps it a bit more interesting.

I'm doing it more or less by Greg's list but I'm not going exactly in release order at this point.
I read Harbinger 1-6, which were my absolute favorites back in the day - they're still pretty decent now. And Shadowman 1-4, which I liked back in the day, show a little more wear now, as it becomes clear there are a lot of cooks working on Jack Boniface. I'm looking forward to getting to the post-Unity Bob Hall run though.
(Blog posts to come on those hopefully shortly.)

I think the Bob Hall run on Shadowman is one of the greatest runs by any writer/artist in the past 25 years. Shadowman was not my favorite book or character but Hall's run was the best work, over a sustatained period of time, in the history of the Valiant Universe.sbcomics wrote:I'm doing it more or less by Greg's list but I'm not going exactly in release order at this point.

I agree, and the ending genuinely affected me.xodacia81 wrote:I think the Bob Hall run on Shadowman is one of the greatest runs by any writer/artist in the past 25 years.
